I lean toward a driven blues style ala SRV, and progressive Christian worship ala Lincoln Brewster. I have Kinman Blues in my Strat and Kinman Broadcasters in my Tele.

In my 85 Japanese System 1 strat, I've got the stock pickups but looking at getting a set of duncan singles.

My Hand built super strat,

Stevie Vai Setup H-S-H actually running H-H-H,
Neck Carparelli XV 13.5K output
Middle SD Little 59 11.58K output
Bridge Carparelli XV 15.5K output

As you can see, the 2 carparelli's are fairly hot, but they have a very vintage clean tone, because all three pups are humbuckers all positions are hum cancelling, and the 4th position neck and middle, sounds incredibly close to stevie Vai's tone in "for the love of god" and "Blue Powder"

In my late 2006 (The Upgraded one) Highway 1 I have the stock pickups.

In my 1986 MIJ '68RI I have the stock pickups.

In my 1986 MIJ '72RI I have WCR SR's. I would probably have the stock pickups in this one too, but by the time I got it they had been replaced by SD's. I'm not a fan of SD's so they were taken out within minutes of me getting the guitar.

[quote="stagemasterplayer"]Chet Atkins wouldn't have sounded very good using Jeff Becks's guitar or vice-versa. Some people play country, some play surf, jazz, blues, or hard rock - if they don't tell you what they play when they recommend pickups it is basically useless info./quote]

My oh my--I don't mean to be unkind, but I must disagree heartily with the "Chet Atkins wouldn't sound very good using Jeff Beck's guitar or vice-versa" statement.

Chet Atkins could--and did--make any guitar he played sound good. He had Gretches, Gibsons, Fenders, D'Angelos, and many others in his arsenal; different woods, pickups, neck profiles, construction techniques...and he always sounded like himself.

Likewise, Jeff Beck has used Esquires, Telecasters, Stratocasters, and even Les Pauls; lo and behold, he sounds like himself.

The tone might be a bit different when a guitarist uses a different axe, but the style of play is the same...

...to prove this point, my band has a song called "Travis County Line"; the song is an instrumental that kind of sounds like the Vaughan Brothers jamming (Travis County is where Austin, Texas is located)...Texas Rockin' Blues.

In the early days of the band, the "other" guitarist (no longer with the group) played a mahoghany-bodied G&L F100 with a Gibson PAF humbucker in the neck and a Seymour Duncan humbucker of some headbanging/shredder variety in the bridge, which went into a Boss DS1 and through a Roland JC120 amp. He was the hotrod of the group.

My guitar part was played with my swamp-ash Telecaster (P90 in the neck position, standard Tele PU in the bridge) through a Leslie simulator into my '63 reissue Vibroverb. I was/am the more laid-back, Jimmie Vaughan/Derek O'Brien aficionado of the group.

Our tones couldn't have been more different. But during this particular song, we would trade rigs for a solo or two, just for a "stage trick"...he would play my Tele through my effects/amp and I would play his G&L through his effects/amp.

I had to wrestle his guitar a bit (he set his action higher that I did, with heavier strings), and I usually switched to the neck pickup instead of the screamy shred job he was using, but I sounded just like ME playing through a hard rocker's rig. I would also have fun with the tremolo for that one song (I don't have any of my guitars set up with a whammy bar).

He had to pick a bit lighter than usual due to my set up, but he sounded just like HIMSELF playing through a bluesy Texas Roadhouse player's rig.

Different guitars make you play a bit different, and different pickups, effects, amps, tone woods, even neck profiles do lend themselves to a particular playing style or sound. They all help us to get closer to the "holy grail" tone we all have in our head(s), but ultimately, we sound like ourselves, no matter what.

The original premise of someone not sounding good through another rig is flawed; they might not sound exactly the same, but Chet (when alive) and Jeff (until death) will always sound good...[/u]

To get back the original question--

In my Stratocaster I have Pete Biltoft Vintage Vibe SP90 pickups; a Strat-sized P90 that gives the girth and punch of a P90, but retains the sparkle and spank of a Strat.

In my Telecaster I put a Mighty Mite P90 in the neck position--it's everything a P90 is supposed to be--and the stock Tele bridge pickup (vintage voiced).

My G&L F100 has the stock phase- and coil-tapped MFD humbuckers.

I love all of them for different reasons (and tones!), but the Tele has become the go-to guitar for recording, jamming, etc. Solid, funky and cool all in one!

If I upgrade, it's usually to Seymour Duncans - normally Alnico 2 Pro or SSL1 for vintage tones. Often it's a SSL3 high output for the bridge, but sometimes with the coil tap option. One strat has a 'lil59 in the bridge.

Seymour Duncans are easy to find, and they recently sent me a promo shirt, T shirts and a promo baseball cap when they were out of stock recently.. Great service, great company.

Rumpelstiltskin pickups.

Experience pickup in the neck, based on Jimi's early sound (nails it) and an overwound CBS-style pickup for clean tones with a little more bite.

I'm really happy with mine, and they sound better than HWY-1 p-ups.

In my 2008 Squier Strat 57/62 pickups;in both my 2002 Squier Strat and 2007 Squier Tele right now both are stock.

Methinks from hendrixfan99's recommendations I'll probably go with a set of Rumpelstiltskin pickups for my other Strat and my Tele.
