Hey all.
I have a 2000 floyd rose classic stratocaster. Besides the floyd rose hardware, it has a hot rod humbucker in the bridge position and the other two are standard strat single coils.

Now, the hot rod humbucker is a keeper. -selector position 1

I tend to use the humbucker the most but it seems that I get alot of noise from selector positions 3 and 5.

The guitar is a unique wiring which goes like this:

position 1 -humbucker

position 2 - middle single coil, plus HALF the humbucker
(I use this sometimes..)

Position 3 - Middle pickup only
( I have never liked the sound at this selection, lots of noise/hum too)

position 4 -all three pickups
(I use this for playing softer songs, background playing)

Position 5 -Neck and Humbucker
(Not a fan of this setting, too muddy, but is actually not a whole lot different than position 4, with the exception that it is quite noisy/hummy)

I am considering either of these three options:

1) modifying the wiring to have position 5 be neck pickup only

2) modifying the wiring as above AND replacing the neck pickup

3) Modifying the wiring as above AND replacing the neck AND middle pickup

I love classic rock, pop, some metal, and also blues.

Any of you fender freaks have some experience or suggestions?

-thanks all!

There is just so many options it is an almost impossible decision to make, especially when reviews and "talk" is all you really have to go by.
I can listen to demos on my computer, but it is hardly a reproduction of what they will sound like with my set-up. Right?

HSH huh? MAYBE if a stacked Humbucker would work.
I don't know if I like the look of a wider pickup in my guitar.'s neck position

I also worry about keeping it all in phase, and somewhat even, by way of signal output. Don't want to start experimenting, so to speak.

I also suspect some kind of electronics thing happens to produce hum in position 3 and 5. I can't pretend to know all the subtleties of wiring and shielding and what exactly can produce noise but the guitar has always been noisier in the selections that include those single coils. It kind of goes from nice and clean in pos 1 and gets noisy from there, with 3 and 5 the most notable.

Rewire position 5 to Neck pickup only. This will give you a very recognizable blues tone. If you don't like the tone, then consider a new pickup.

A note about hum. You won't ever get rid of it when playing a single coil pickup. There are things you can do to reduce it, but it will never be as quiet as a HUM-bucker.

Good luck.

I`m thinking I might try isolating that neck pickup by re-wiring and seeing how it sounds. I`ve read about shielding and such and may try that as well. I`ll chew on it a bit..

-thanks

I have to tell all that dealing with Dimarzio on the subject of pickup selection and technical info is absolutely amazing. I had a tech there e-mailing me through the weekend regarding questions I had. The service was really above and beyond anything I am used to. -BRAVO!

Dimarzio does not make an Area 51. They make an Area 58, an Area 61, and an Area 67.

I don't have to play those pickups in a specific area do I?
I am probably closest to the 49th parallel, so I figure I would need Area 49, but I don't see those listed.

Since the Area 67 is the brightest of the three I think that should go in the neck position. The Area 58 could go in the middle position with the Area 61 in the bridge. Or you could swap the middle and bridge positions if you want. But I would still keep the Area 67 in the neck since the neck position is the bassiest by nature.

This wiring setup is pretty useful:

No middle PU by itself but you don't like that one anyway. Plus you get Bridge and neck PU together which is a nice combo.

The singlecoil by itself is going to be noisy so pos 3 is going to hum. The singlecoil in the neck won't noisecancel with the bridge humbucker so will hum there. I like of option you have with pos 2 - using half the humbucker to cancel with the mid. wish my HSS was set up that way. Maybe you could set it up to use half the bridge humbucker to noisecancel with the neck in pos 5 too?

I agree with not routing out room for a full sized humbucker in the neck - just too crowded. I mainly use my bridge humbucker or mid/neck together. The neck and mid are too noisy by themselves and I don't have the option of splitting the bridge to cancel with the mid. Mid/bridge together is A LITTLE quieter than mid by itself. Was going to change to a stacked humbucker in the neck and a push/pull pot to let me split it to cancel with the mid but ended up getting a new acoustic instead so have to start saving again. :(

Actually the bridge and neck can cancel each other out if you use the correct coil. Notice the bridge NORTH and middle and bridge SOUTH and neck. These should both be hum canceling. The only humming should be in position 5 but a single coil in that position is worth the hum IMO.
