Probaly an 18", beveled if possible.

If not, whats a good tool to use for checking the straightness of youre neck
I know they sell them but money is tight for me right now, hospital bill took about everything i had.....LOL..TYLONOL COST ME $ 70.00 .. LOL....
I'm back & getting better now and i'm trying to get my strat back in shape. .I have a 94" 40th anniversary strat usa, " EMILY ".

If anyone could help me or lead me in the right direction i sure will be very greatfull..

By straightness, do you mean bow/relief? If so then all you need is a capo, some automotive feeler gauge and the fender setup manual.

Hello, & thank you for youre help.
Yes i'm talking about the relief in the neck. I almost ordered an 18" straight edge out of stewart macdonald's catalog for close to $ 50.00. I know alot of people can look down the neck and tell but my eye site is limited..LOL..

So all i need is feeler guages a capo and the specs on my guitar ?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOURE HELP
I REALLY DO APPRECIATE IT

JEFF

They're needed to make the job easier and faster, say if you had many Strats. Nice Strat btw. I have a couple but I am at work now and pictures are home.

Ok, i see. Well the only strat i have is emily and being since she's a very special breed and all i'd like to try my best to set her up myself, and make sure she is set up right. Because i just don't trust anyone around here with her, they don't know what their doing anyway. Well, LOL, i'm learning myself but if i don't get her the way i want the first time at least i don't have to pay no one.
Don't mean to sound like a cheap skape.

Are there any good tutorial books on how to set up a guitar you know of?

PS.. WHAT DID YOU THINK OF MY STRAT ?

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME
JEFF

If you cant set it up yourself just right you can always bring it to the shop anyway. Just be very very careful if you need to adjust the truss rod, go a 1/4 turn at a time, tune it back then check relief again. You can really do damage to the neck if you go too hard on the truss rod.

There are a few books out there, one in particular comes highly recommended in these forums called "Guitar Player Repair Guide" by Dan Erlewines.

I would start by putting the guitar to Fender specs then adjust to your liking accordingly.

Your Strat is very nice, Anniversary models are always keepers, take good care of her. It seems all original but did the pickup covers come that way?

Couldn't you just cut a yard stick in half to make your own 18" straightedge? I like Stew Mac, but some of their stuff is just a bit too crazy priced...

Well, you could and i've done that but found out wood isn't always a reliable source. I've been thinking about cutting my carpenters framing square and using it. It's metal and it's straight as can be. I think i'm gonna do that tonight and test her out.

Just went thru the same thing. First guy who said feller gauges. Must have. Just a drawer full of some basic machinists tool from eBay will make you feel like a pro and eliminate most of the tools seen in the Stew-Mac catalog. Then i was cruising Home Depot and something caught my eye. A stainless steal w.plastic handle kinda straight edge/squeege thing used to level out spackling compound on sheet rock. Stainless steel for $6 ! What have I got to lose? Took it home and checked it against my Starrett machinist's straight-edge. No daylight, good for less than 1/1000th.

BTW, cheap Chinese needle files from Harbor Freight for fretwork, bridge saddles, and nuts for a LOT less than Stew-Mac. Go to the local Funeral parlor that does cremations and they'll give away bone material for making your own nuts. I got some guy''s femur for $2 and can make hundreds of bone nuts for the price of a Big Mac.
