What are microphonic pickups and how do they differ from pickups that aren't microphonic?

A microphonic pickup is one where the coil is loose and due to the amplified sound of the guitar actually getting "picked up" through that coil, it begins to vibrate, causing the pickup to emit all sorts of howling and shrieking.

The remedy is to have the pickup's coil fully saturated in a wax solution which upon cooling and drying, leaves the the coil firm and immobile so that it can no longer absorb the amplified sound. The erroneous but popular term for this, "potting".

I bought a used '64 or so Deluxe Blackface-no reverb-and a real cheap solidbody came with it. It had one pu-microphonic. So in my experience, a microphonic pickup is one you can speak into and your voice can be heard coming from the amp. I always thought that some kind of actual microphone component was used for a pickup...never thought about loose windings... This was 25+ years ago and I wanna say the guitar was a Kay, but I might be mistaken.

This is true as the coil is vibrating from your voice.
