Hi,

I have recently bought a Highway 1 strat and it rocks. Except for one thing. When I adjust the volume, I can get an increase between say 1 and 4 on the dial, but upon reaching 4 and beyond (all the way up to 10) there is no further increase in volume. It's like all the adjustment is compressed between positions 1 and 4.

My other Strat (90's Squier) has full volume adjustment range spread over the 1-10 positions on the dial, as one would expect.

Anybody got any ideas what it could be? Maybe a dodgy pot?

Thanks!

Welcome!

Obviously, you have a wiring problem and/or an inappropriate/defective pot. If you're not even semi-skilled with electronics, take it back to where you bought it for remedy. If this is not possible, take it to a qualified tech who would be able to easily find and fix the problem.

Thanks for that Martian. I forgot to say that I am left handed - and so is the guitar of course.

I've done a bit more research since my first post, and looks like it could be that I need an Anti-log pot in there? Sounds like the fault could be something to do with there being a regular log pot in there at the moment?

Yeah I guess I should take it in.

OK, I've done a little more digging and thought I'd post this follow up for any other Lefties out there who may come across the same problem.

Apparently what I'm experiencing is expected behavior on a left handed Fender. They wire the volume and tone controls in reverse so that when turning them anti-clockwise, the volume (or tone) increases. AFAICT this is purely to make the controls turn in the same direction as a right-handed guitar. Unfortunately this is to the detriment of the sound and amount of control available! (how bloody stupid). The solution is simple: rewire the pots as they would be wired in a right handed guitar. This means that the volume (or tone) will increase when turned clockwise, but you should get the full range out of the pot.

I'm going to try this, because I really don't care which way I have to turn the dial, I just want a full range of adjustment.

Read all about it here: http://www.fenderforum.com/forum.html?db=&topic_number=684827

Fender! Listen up! THIS IS RIDICULOUS. If you really think it's so important to have the controls on lefty guitars turning anti-clockwise then invest in some anti-log pots rather than crippling the guitar...
