I have a MIM Strat, changed out ( or tried to) my first pick guard, 4 of the 11 holes are half a hole, or more off from the new pick guard. The new pick guard is an 1/8 " shorter then the original, there is a gap infront of the trem now with this new guard. And I had to trim it some to fit around the base of the neck.
Is this common when swapping out guards?
How many pick guards do I have to buy to find one that lines up, and fits?
Thanks, BF

My experience for the most part was that it's hit or miss where it's usually miss. I've gotten to the point now where I'll send the original pickguard to a custom pickguard manufacturer which, for about $15 more than buying a prepackaged one, pretty much guarantees me a perfect fit. I don't like having to do it but I got fed up with situations identical to your's.

I think I get the picture, I found a post way back in the archive here of a similar question. Good tip by the way of sending in your pick guard to have one custom made. Thanks for the reply, BF

Glad to help!

As a matter of fact, earlier this evening, I spoke with a most reliable Fender dealer about replacing a brand new, Squier Standard Strat's OEM pickguard with another brand new, genuine Squier Standard Strat pickguard. I explained that my aim is to convert this particular Strat from a SSS pickup configuration to a HH one. I asked him 'the' question, straight out as to whether his new Standard Squier HH pickguard would positively retrofit this new Standard Squier Strat in front of me. He told me that the pickguards are made in various foreign countries and consequently, he could not be positively sure.

Isn't truth refreshing?

So, once again, sending the OEM pickguard to have one custom made from it is the only way.

Would you mind sharing where you send them for custom duplication?

I find that the Fender pickguards don't vary as much as the Squire or other brands. Once I get a good fit from a Fender, then I'll keep using Fenders.

Also, not all 8 and 11 hole pickguards holes are the same. In certain years, a couple of holes moved in the 11 hole pickguard.

One thing you could do is find a style that you are going to stick with, then fill in the holes with glue and a dow, and re-drill new holes.

Good luck

8) If you drill new holes, the Old Holes are covered by the new guard, So--- unless they are so close that you don't have Wood-- :D . After doing a bunch of Pawn Shop Orphans [Squires] I advise you to try this. Providing that the guard physically fits at the neck, trim with a 'Dremel Tool' and diamond grit sanding wheel [ from 'Harbor Freight'] If necessary. Place the guard in position. line up a hole at the bottom of the guard. Start a screw ,then go round the guard STARTING screws at opposing corners, like Lug Nuts on the spare tire. If holes are only 1/2 covered, start the screw a little, and use your thumb to push the screw twards the hole as you tighten it little by little. Tighten each screw that almost fits, in rotation a little at each time, round the guard in this manner, and if none of the screws has been run in all the way, the guard will center itself and the almost fitting screws will , with the help of your thumb pressure, go in straight enougf to look Perfect. :D I have done 5 Squires with guards from guitar fetish.com, and they All look great. in extreme cases, you can 'womble out' the hole in the guard, a little, in the direction of the hole, and the head of the screw will Almost hide it completely.
