Anyone know a good resource for researching PUPs? I'm at the point where I'm ready to upgrade my tone, but don't know a whole heck of a lot about what makes one pickup sound one way and another one sound another way.

I wouldn't mind getting Fender pick ups, but I'd like to learn more about the other brands, too.

Sorry if this was in another post, didn't see it earlier, and thanks in advance!

You should go to vintagevibeguitars.com it's closed now because Pete is on holiday, but it reopens on the 11 of this month (january). Pete's a great guy and if you email him I'm sure he'd answer any questions that you'd have about tonality or otherwise in pickups. You should also check out his stuff, he can make pretty much any pickup you want with any sound you could dream of. check out his site, you won't be let down, and his prices are great for the amount of work he does! Hope this helps you!

Check out Seymour Duncan's web site. I don't own any of their pickups so I can't personally vouch for them but they must be doing something right as they've been in business for long enough.

What I like is that they use one guy playing one guitar into one amp and just swap in different pickups to record their sound clips. That's about as fair of a comparison as you can get between their pickups.

http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/au ... replaceme/

Evaluate your current pickups and really think about what you want to be different - More treble? More output? Something else? Then, find the sound clip that sounds closest to what you have and compare the rest of them. It's not a foolproof method where you're guaranteed to find exactly what you need, but it's a lot better than just going off of manufacturer's descriptions that use ridiculous and ambiguous marketing buzzwords like "creamy" and "vintage" to describe how their products sound.

Trust your ears.

For Fender vintage sounds, this is a good place to start:

http://www.acmeguitarworks.com/Strat_Pi ... ips_W1.cfm

same format as above - same guitar, same amp, same setup - just different pickups.

You are welcome. Wish I could take credit for it, learned it from Miami Mike! Bread upon the waters....
