I've a friend who makes picks from various species of wood, maple, ebony, cocoa etc...they sound better, BUT they are expensive...

There are a lot of people here who like V-picks. They are very expensive, but people swear by 'em.

Hi

I purchased some V picks because of the reviews from the forum. They took a bit to get used to from the thin type picks, but now I love them, theirrrr grrrreat!

Regards.

Take a few dollars--go to a music store, buy different picks-
Look for variation in thickness, shape, size, materials and flexibility. (Some thick picks are more flexible than others.)
Don't be concerned with the appearance.

Then go home and play with them--see how you like them.
If you have no preference--great--you can play with anything.
If you're not sure--give it time.
If you find once you like best go back and buy some more of them.

But keep them all--your tastes may change.
(Of course you can give some away to other guitarists if you want to.

Hello JoeyRoache,

Firstly welcome to the forum.

I been playing for about 4 decades
and am always looking for the best pick.

Generally I use a fender ex-heavy white.
I like the V-picks great for accuracy.
Genuine tortoise shell over hyped I pass on them

At the opposite end of the spectrum you may like
a thin pick -- milk bottle caps can be fashiond easily.

Try many.

Cheers.

Cheers.

Brass is my personal favourite. Then i like dunlop .88s for rock and faster styles. Silver for jazz. The brass is very percussive and the silver is polished to look like a mirror, its very smooth on chord runs.

Personally I like really hard picks I think you can strum the strings better with those :)

The one that I have been grabbing for more than any others lately is the "Ultra Cool" Heavy 1.0 (the black ones - not the White). Ultra Cool is the brand. They are large and have some gripper stuff on them that makes them easy to hold. Problem is, I haven't seen them around many stores, so availability may be bad.

I do occasionally use a V-Pick Lite Freakishly Large. It offers a much softer sound, is not quite as large as the Ultra Cool. When I ordered from V-Pick, I also got the "One that is Carlos Santana's Favorite Pick". The thing is about as thick as a slice of bread - not quite but is something like 2.5 thick.

Whenever I see a pick of interest, I will take one and drop it on the glass of the sales counter in the store. You will notice some very distinct sound differences when doing this and it will give you some idea of what the pick will do hitting the strings - not scientific but it works for me. The Ultra Cool has a very metallic sound while the V-Pick is more plastic-poker chip sounding, while a Dunlop Tortex 1.14 has a bit of a combination of both and that is pretty close to how they sound being used.

As others have said--try a variety--different sizes, shapes, thicknesses, materials. Don't be too worried about the more expensive ones, at least at first.

See what fits your hand, strings, playing styles, that sort of thing.

I prefer Dunlop Tortex for my Les Paul, but Dunlop Gator Grips on my Mustang.

The pick I find myself using more and more is the one growing from the tips of my fingers.

I bought a set of 3 Gibson Pure Medium picks.
Nothing fancy, just needed some picks and had £1 in my pocket.
I have used just one of them for a full year, the other 2 sit brand new on top of my amp
