I was looking at a set yesterday and noticed the sticker on them.

My first question, is there another way to tell that they're TS if the sticker is removed?

Secound, Have they always came with the sticker?

Final, When did they start making them? I hear a lot about some MIJ's coming with TS(pre-1990). I wouldn't think they were making them before that.

If you feel leary about the set you looked at you can always go on Ebay. I see them there all the time for around $ 170 for the set of 3 and their made by Fender. I have them in one of my Strats and they sound great if your into the blues.

I was looking at them in the store right out of the package so I konw they were the real deal. I don't think I like TS's and I'm looking at a 1990 MIJ Strat. I've been told that the good ones come with TS's (80's -90's). If I buy the guitar I'm gonna take off the pick guard to look but I wouldn't think they've always put that sticker on the PUPS. Also, I thought the TS's were modeled after SRV and he died in 90. I would'nt think they started making TS's until a few years after his death. Just guessing.

There are a few ways to identify Texas Specials. But to make a definite ID you will want to be able to measure the DC resistance of each pickup. Older Texas Specials will have a very overwound bridge pickup. So measuring that will be the dead giveaway. But just by looking at them you should notice that the wire used to wrap the coils is a dark purple-ish color rather than the more typical bright copper color. You would also see a vintage magnet stagger with a rather tall G-string pole and a very low B-string pole. But the old style 57/62 Reissue pickup looks like this too, so you will really want to measure the DC resistance of each pickup in the set. The old specs on Texas Specials were 7.6k for the bridge pickup, 6.5k for the middle pickup, and 6.2k for the neck pickup. The 57/62 pickup will measure at about 5.9k in all three positions.

So get yourself a multimeter and check them out. And you're right, Fender seldom puts the stickers on stock pickups. Occasionally you will see them, but usually the sticker is used just for the aftermarket pickups.

G'day, Just sourcing opinions.

I have a set of Texas Specials and I'm excited and can't wait to hear them, but I'm between two minds as to which Strat I should put them in.

I have a MIJ 1984 Fender re issue 1962 Vintage Stratocaster and a MIM 2003 Standard Fender Stratocaster.

Any suggestions welcome.

Cool, yeah I've decided to put them in my MIM strat. my guitar tech is sick at the moment so that only prolongs the agony of not being able to enjoy these lovely PUPS.

I will let you know what I think of them once he completes the install.

G'day Mate, hey just a reply to let you know how I got on with those Custom Shop Texas Specials.

My Guitar Tech came back to work and installed the TS's and I was thrilled when he told me that the neck pick up was dead.

I purchased them on Ebay for $150 au. He had a mate hand re wind the Neck PUP back to it's original specs and it is fine now.

Anyway after the misery of this problem, the dude that sold them to me over Ebay compensated the costs. Good On Him.

Final result is that I picked up my MIM Strat today from my Guitar tech and plugged it into my Fender Hotrod Deville 410 and I'm in Texas Special SRV heaven.

I am just stoked about the wicked sound of these things. GREAT PUPS I SAY.

FYI.

Cheers.

I had em in my Strat and loved em.

Apart from the Custom Shop box they came in, there was absolutely no identification markings on them. Put them next to the stock pups the only way to tell them apart were the staggered pole pieces.

Cheers.

Cool, yeah I got the Vintage Packaging and also on the TS PUPS I noticed a Blue dot on the back of the Neck, No dot on the Middle and a Red dot on the Bridge Pick up.

My next set of PUPS I can't wait to hear are Tonerider City Limits Set. Apparently they are rival to the TS's.

So what was Seymour D thinking of when he came out with the Staggered Alnico II set, which has almost identical Impedance and resonant peak? and sound just like Texas Specials. And he wants close to $220 for them.
