Yesterday I installed my long awaited SCN's, and I'll have to say that I love em. However, i'm getting a lot of feedback from the bridge pup when my amp is in any kind of drive mode. I played it through my hot rod deluxe, and a Roland cube 15. While on the clean channels there's no noise to be heard on both amps. When I switch into any kind of overdrive or distortion then there's really loud feedback. If I turn the volume and tone pots down a little, it'll go away.

Did I forget something when soldering the wires? Is it a grounding issue? Or is it something that I'm just gonna have to live with? I thought I followed the schematic, and Martians advice, pretty well, but then again I am a noob at this.

How close to the strings is the pickup?

Depress the E and e strings at the last fret and measure again.

OK. That may be a little too close for that pickup.

Try 3/64 on the e side and 5/64 on the E side.

OK. Recheck your solders, make sure they are all good solders. A good solder is shiny and chrome looking. A bad solder is dull and satin like.

I checked all the solders. The only one that looks even remotely dull is the hot wire from the input jack. I think i'm also gonna redo the black and green wire on the vol pot. It's not a dull solder, I just don't like the way it's sitting.

Apparently, the coil or coils of the offending pickup itself are vibrating under high gain. Hence, the pickup MAY be microphonic. In other words, the sound coming out of your amp is being picked up again by the pickup itself and fed back into the amp in a loop which causes the squeal, howl, feedback or whatever you want to call it.

There are three remedies (aside from forgetting about overdriving it):

1. Make absolutely sure that the pickup itself is snugly mounted all around on the bridge plate and that any of the pickup's directly attached components cannot mechanically vibrate. If they have wobble, take appropriate action as this alone may solve your problem. If it doesn't:

2. In order to virtually eliminate feedback, The coils of any pickup need to be fully wax saturated. Typically, 4 parts paraffin wax to 1 part bees' wax. The common term is, "potting" or "potted" but this term is actually not accurate as potting is more of a sealing of the pickup's hardware together.

Most high end pickup manufacturers (like Fender) do dip most of their pickup models in the wax bath. Unfortunately but sporadically (and this is not limited to any one manufacturer), the wax does not penetrate to the innermost coil windings because either the pickup wasn't left in the dip long enough or the wax wasn't hot enough.

Only some techs have the proper equipment and experience for safe and effective coil saturation procedures. For inexperienced, "do it yourselfers", this could be a dangerous venture. For this reason, I won't get into the actual process.

3. If you pickup is under warranty, you might want to exchange it.

I just resoldered the connections from the bridge pup and the feedback/squeel is now managable, but not completely gone. I checked the pup for any looseness and everything seems tight. And, since I use my tele mainly on the clean channel there's nothing for me to really worry about. I can live with it. If I want to go into high gain territory then I always have my flying V and strat.

Thanks again CAFeathers and Martian for all the good advice!!
