Hi, I am "guitar-shopping" for a friend of mine. He is a pretty good player and plays a wide variety of music; though he isn't a classical or jazz guitarist. I want to get him a guitar that will last him for a long time and is good enough to be used to perform. Lets say my price range is about $500. He mainly plays rock songs, but also some slow stuff like "Yellow-Ledbetter" by Pearl Jam. It would also need great action. Thanks for your help!! :D

You can't go wrong with a Standard MiM Strat.

Yes, agreed. However, also buy a hard-shell case to go with it since one does not come with it. The case plus the MIM std will run you about $500.

I have a MIM Strat, you can`t go wrong with that guitar. I paid $ 170 for it on an ebay auction and with the Texas Specials it sounds great.

Highway One Telecaster is a great choice, a little more $$ for a lot more bang for the buck!

Well, i can see the budget issue, still, and this just my opinion, for an intermediate guitar player i would choose an American Standard Strat.
It´s the one i use right now, and as a player i feel that less than that, it wouldn´t push me to my full capabilities. I also have a japanese strat and i feel that for an intermediate player it wouldn't do. I use it as a backup. I´ve never tried the model the other guys mentioned, so it´s better to see if your friend likes playing it, thats all that matters in the end.
Be well.

I would definitely recommend the MIM standard Telecaster or Stratocaster. Very affordable and good guitars.
