I just want to hear your opinions. I have the classic players 50 strat and want to change the pickups for something more rocking, but I hate the looks of humbucking and rail pickups in a strat.

I mostly play progressive rock/metal, but the clean sound is as important as the distorted. Is the SCN pickups any great? Perhaps with a mid-booster?
What should I get?

I've heard a lot of people say for metal hot noiseless pickups are great. I've heard the SCNs are good also. Just pick up a few strats with different pick ups and see what you like the best. It also depends on your amp.

Contact Jim at www.crcoils.com and ask him if has any of his SR's left. Very hot, Jimi and Stevie tones easily dialed in. Pricey but very much worth it.

Chet...

You mean to say that the SR pups are VERY HOT as in... very popular, not that they give you some
 scortching  tones compared to regular Strat pups...

And to call them "Pricey" is probably even an understatment...

I heard 57/62's recently and they sounded very good clean. But when driven (and it was through the same amp, a SRRI) they were very inarticulate. To my ear, they don't handle drive or distortion very well.

Yep, I find the 57/62 much the same. "Inarticulate" is a good term... but I've used "Brassy" in the past. Some of the nicest clean tones though...

If you really are sincere about loving good clean tones, and like good tone in general, yes, the 57/62's are terrific. And so what if they aren't given to distortion as well as others might be? Let the stomp boxes you will invariably employ anyway do that dirty work for you as well as relying on whatever amp you've got. Just feed it that pure signal and let the rest be as it may! :)

I've these PUs on my '57 and they distort nice, but the hum is definitely out of control.

My suggestions would be Dimarzio Hs-3s. They wrok great for metal and rock.

HS-3 is a nice round sounding pickup, but it is very low on output. So you can expect it to need some significant boost. Don't let the specs fool you. It has a DC resistance of something around 24k, but it has less output than a typical 6k single coil. So don't think it's going to drive your preamp all by itself. Unless of course your preamp has gain to spare.

I've used Lace Sensor reds before in my strat. Seems you loose a little clarity though. I would look into the EMG pickup set for strat if you want cranking high output with no noise. Of course they are active, which means you'll have to replace the 9 volt battery every once in a while.

I used the HS-3 for 10 years. I know the beast very well...it's a pickup tought to work not on output, but on quality of signal, like the SD Alnico II pro that Slash uses. Both Malmy and Slash get their sound from low output pickups and hig gain amps, and they work VERY well.

The resistance doesn't give you information about the output, while the inductance is a better parameter for that, in the case of the Hs-3, most of the resistance comes from the dummy coil at the base of the pickup, that is noise cancelling, but doesn't give anything to the signal.

Anyway, great pickup, great design.
