just purchased a set of strat 57/62 PUPS off ebay and the box and case say fender but the bottom of the base plates have no marking designating them as a fender product. i have purchased tele SCN and 51 nocaster and and noisless and strat scn and all of these have print and writing on the base plates designating them as fender and even the PUP position.

does fender make generic looking no name on the plate or are these bogus knock off. it pretty blatant if they are bogus, you would think they would make them look more like the original. this is the first for me seeing this; what do you think. Does fender mark all there pickups on the base plate as genuine fender?

thanks for any feed back.

Fender Tex-Mex pickups I put in a Strat had no obvious markings, so they may be ok...

I've seen many without the marking or logo. To check and see if they sound exactly like the originals, find a stock American Vintage '57 or '62 Reissue Strat. They come stock in both of those Strats.

Yeah, the 57/62 is supposed to look like a vintage pickup, which has no particular markings on them to ID them from anything else. Fender does not go out of their way to make identifying pickups an easy job for us.

hi there!

can i please add to this thread with a similar question.

I just bought custom 69 pickups "sealed and unopened"....as i opened them, i found that the pickups, are what can only be described as "gunky", like little bits of wax or something all over them, even on the magnets, they just do not look new at all...is this standard for pickups or should they be pretty much pristine out of the box??? any help is appreciated

cheers!!

EDIT: i should add that they are still very much white, with no chips/scratches, just remnants of this gunky wax....i dont care if its a by-product of the production but ive never had new pickups before and dont know how to tell if ive just been screwed???

The wax is typical and a necessary step in making pickups. After a pickup is wound it is typically dipped in wax so it doesn't become too microphonic in use. There is a balance to be made I suppose, but too little wax could make you return the pickups because they would be unusable. Too much wax can make the pickup a bit less "lively" but it's typically not a big deal. I would just remove the excess from the poles and flatwork if needed. Don't even try to remove any from the wire wrappings around the bobbin. That wire is about as thick as hair and one break will kill the pickup.

It's usually best just to leave the wax alone though. Think of it as protection for the pickup and making it more solid.
