The CS69 has the lowest output and the brightest tone signature, as well as the deepest bottom and the most scooped midrange. Clearly the most vintage set of the group.

The CS54 set also has a more vintage output but the bridge pickup is clearly more aggressive and is my favorite Fender bridge pickup. Overall though they have an "aged" tone that I would call a bit more woody and complex.

The Fat 50s set has a tone signature that, while still having plenty of chime, has a thicker lower midrange than the others. This tends to fatten-up the tone when played with more volume or grit. This set also has a reverse wound, reverse polarity middle pickup for humbucking 2 & 4 position tones that still are quite clear and hollow.

SMark--How would the Fat 50's suit someone who fingerpicks a lot, likes clean, jazzy tones but also thick overdriven sounds for solos and power chording? I've been mulling over pup options for my 96 AmStd and see myself gravitating to Fat 50s and SD SSL-1's. I like a tad hotter sound than the 69s, also like the 54s, and really don't mind the stock ones except they lack "thump" in the neck, which is my fave stomping ground.

Actually, I'd like to see Fender do a "Fat 60s" pickup that is RWRP with more mids and a hotter bridge than the 69s-Or put out the CS 60's that are in the 60's relic guitars-they seem to be the best of all worlds.

I agree. In fact, my favorite set right now is a pair of CS60s (NOS) pickups in the middle and neck along with a CS54 bridge pickup.

For distortion tones, I prefer the SSL-1 over the Fat 50s. I don't fingerpick much myself, but either should be fine there. The SSL-1 tends to have a more complex midrange and so it sings a little better. Good for soloing in that regard.

The folks at the CS did a Fat 60's pickup set for 2014, check out these links:
