I had a Stratocaster called a Strat Plus around 1985 it had really smooth pickups called lace synth or something like that. They were really quiet. Have they been replaced by a better pickup? What was unique to the lace synth other than they were smooth and quiet. Can I still order a strat with lace synth pickups?

Lace Sensors have been around since about 1985. The company, Lace Music Products, was originally under contract with Fender back then to make pickups for Fender guitars. They don't have the same relationship anymore, but there are still a few Fender guitars that come with Lace Sensors as stock pickups. There are many different models of Lace Sensors now. My favorite is the Hot Gold Lace Sensor. I think it's one of the best Strat pickups made, but everyone has their own preferences for tone. Find them at www.lacemusic.com.

is there a difference between the gold and hot gold lace sensors? i've seen a few 25th aniv. gold lace sensors on ebay and they look pretty cool with the clear covers.

Yes there is a difference. Mostly, the Hot Gold uses stronger magnetics than the original Gold. What you hear is a firmer bottom-end and corresponding fatter tone, and a singing upper midrange. But there is no change to the top-end so you still get all the single coil snap and twang that you would otherwise expect.

It can't be a '85 because the first Strat plus was delivered in '87, anyway if it has sperzel tuners it should be one of the first to be produced.

Personally, I wouldn't replace them, they are very nice sounding pickups IMO, Blackmore is still using them in his set neck Strat...but I don't think you can find a stock Fender that use them, they were replaced by the noiseless series in '98, mainly because I think that for Fender it was cheaper to produce insourced pickups.
