My son has a '05 MIM Strat that he'd like to upgrade with new neck and bridge pickups. He's becoming a very good player and is now in a Randy Rhodes phase, loves Jimmy Page and Angus Young playing and gravitates toward classic rock sounds even when he's playing other music (White Stripes, Black Keys, Green Day).

With that tonal palate, what would be some good choices for replacing both the single coils and humbucker on his rig? He has thought about putting a SD HotRail in the neck and a JB in the bridge, but I wonder if he'll miss the clean neck sound (or maybe I'll be the one to miss it!) and get too much treble out of the JB.

I'd like to do a simple upgrade on the first pass before re-wiring to split a neck position humbucker if he goes that route.

The Duncan JB does have a biting treble sound, but also puts out some great harmonics. For a "simple" upgrade, I'd suggest trying some Alnico 5s.

Yes. Either the Alnico 5's or Duncan JB's. It's the sound that he's trying to get. If he wants he should get a Gibson/Epiphone SG/Les Paul for those kinds of sounds. Just an option.... :)

What about a Cool rails in the neck position? It gets a nice clean sound and still can dish out some nice distortion also.
