I'm considering new pups for my 05 MIM, the stocks are okay but a bit too bright for me.

Anyway, as a newbie I am wondering about the difference in sound, tone, and individual string volume between stagger and non-stagger pups. What is the difference?

Hello JRC127,

I own 5 Stratocasters
all have staggered pickups.

On a modern day guitar I
suppose they're the best choice.

Cheers.

I've noticed that some of the newer staggered pups from different mfgrs (Duncan, Fralin, Kinman...) all have a different stagger on the higher strings so it can vary quite a bit.

If you use a wound G, you'll have better and more even string separation with a set of pickups that has the original, traditional, vintage or whatever you want to call it, design of staggered poles. That is where most importantly, the G polepiece is essentially the same height as the D, making them the two highest polepieces in the pickup.

It's weird but I notice that the B string is sometimes louder than the others even thought the stagger puts that pole is somewhat lower than the rest.
