HELP!!! I just replaced my old pu's with 69 customs (neck & middle) & a Seymour Duncan SSL-5 in the bridge. They sound ok in a clean setting with a faint buzz. The major issue is when I use distortion, there is an extremely loud buzz/hum that is almost as loud as the notes being played. When not playing, I have to turn the volume off or the noise is ear shattering. The noise is present in the 1,2,3 & 5 position. The 4 position is fairly quite. I brought the guitar back to the tech that installed the pu's. According to him everything is hooked up correct. He also lined the cavity & pick guard with copper. This problem is rendering the guitar virtually unusable. HELP!!! I'm open to all suggestions.

I'm wondering if your new shielding is actually grounded.

Get out your multimeter.

You could put on a Suhr BPSSC. The BPSSC is the only noise solution that allows you to use your favorite pickup, whatever that is.

Separating the noise solution from pickup preference is brilliant.

"The BPSSC System eliminates the noise while completely retaining the sonic character of pure single-coil pickups. The noise is gone but the sparkle, the chime, and the low-end response that you've come to love in single-coil pickups are all still there."

You can also try the Electro-Harmonix Hum Debugger. It's a stomp box that kills 60 cycle hum. No mods necessary to the guitar. I read that the Suhr system works better on guitars that it is pre-installed on. And that it does not remove all noise.

The 4 position is fairly quiet because the SSL-5 is probably RW/RP to the 69s thereby making that position humbucking.

ANY distortion type foot pedal is a preamp, including distortion devices built into an amp. So, if you are getting the usual hum from single coil pickups, preamping them will surely increase the hum. If you are absolutely sure the wiring is correct, the problem may be that you are using way too much distortion for a single coil set to reasonably tolerate. If this be the case and your stylings require whatever levels of distortion you are currently playing at, you might have to go for stacked humbuckers.
