I have a 2008 AMerican STandard Strat. I am considering new pickups...I don't like the constant hum, and I have a telecaster with SCN pickups that I like a lot. I was wondering if there is a resource for comparing pickups with audio samples (besides youtube)? I want to see how the 54 customs sound vs. the '69s, etc. Most importantly, I don't want to add $200 worth of new pickups and still have the hum.

Most pickup manufacturers will have audio comparisons on thier main web site. At least most I've visited. 8)

Well I don't know if you want to compare the 54's and 69s just Fender brand alone. But they do have brands of pickups by other dealers that have sound samples that you can compare I think it was either www.dimarzio.com and or www.seymour duncan.com if your interested in any other besides Fender.

I have been checking out several manufacturer sites. I keep coming back to the DiMarzio Area series. Especially the '67s, although it seems like a lot of people mix and match between the 58s and 61s and 67s. The reduced noise is a huge plus, and I am all about the idea of a more vintage tone.

Has anyone tried the prewired DIMarzio Virtual VIntage pickguard? It has a 67, 61, and 58 for about $300. How much installation is required?

I ordered a prewired pickguard from Aamps with a Dmarrz 58/58/61 combo. Added a push pull for neck/bridge tele style pickup switching. They sound great. Very versatile. Zero hum.

How much installation is required with one of these? Better yet, does anyone have a link to installation instructions?

IF YOur looking for true vintage or a custom touch IMO the best place to go is to Liny Fralines web page. THis guy is known as a PU God and he custom winds them to your liking. HE also has a trade polocy wher if you purchase a set of PU's from him and you dont like the sound he lets you trade them in. HE also offers his standard sets and will over/under sind them to your tast. When you call there you talk to him directly so you can tell him what you looking for in a PU and his guidance is incredable. HIs sets run at $220-240 USD but the great thing is if you ever decide to get ris of them these sets do not loose value as long as you leave enough wire on them when you do your install.

On the noisless issue I believe it is John Shure who offers the BPSSC which I have seen personally that works wonders. IT is a backplate that you install and it cancels hum period. The only issue I am not posative on and maybe someone else can touch on this is I believe this is used only if you do not have a RWRP pickup on board. AS I said, I am not posative on this and you may be able to use it even with a RWRP pickup but I am thinking that the RWRP pickup would be an answer to the problem.

I build custom Strats myself. I get the bodies made from either Warmoth or USACustom and I finish them and build them ground up. My last project I ended up putting in the Fender Vintage Noisless PU's and I'll tell you what, these PU's are incredable to hear. They have that beautifull bell like tone but if you use the capacitor that comes with it and bridge it between the pots you can get a deeper bass tone by adgusting the tone knob to lower that clear glass sound. I can hold the guitar right up to my Amp and got zero feedback unless I have the gain cranked to the max then there is"some".

The greatest PU I have ever heard in my life is from a company called Langcaster. This guy builds the only true low impedance PU that I know of and the sound is something you would only think could show up in a sci fi example. They do cost a bit of cash however and if I'm not mistaken there about $400 for a prewierd PG ready to go. You will never and I mean never hear another PU sound like one of these. This is a set that you could plug into a cheap $75 amp and still sound good. I have no idea what the science is behind there PU's but I'm telling you, these things are sick. Only problem is if you live in the US these guitars are not at every store. I live in Massachusetts and I stumbled across one in a local shop one day. I played that thing for almost 3 hours and hated listening to any other sound after that for a good week or two. EMG, SD, DiMarzio, Custom made ect... nothing sounds like these and the videos on YT do no justice for the real life sound.

Well, I hope I helped ya with some info on getting rid of that hum we all have learned to hate. You may want to look into a set of LACE PU's as well. They have some pretty good combos to offer and I have used them quite a-bit over the last 5 years for their quiet almost zero hum.

I have this combo in my Strat but I installed the pickups myself and not the way the prewired setup comes. Rather, I have the 67 in the neck position, the 58 in the middle position and the 61 in the bridge positon. I have NEVER had a better sounding Strat in ANY position or with ANY combination of pickups (as I've wired my Strat to be capable of). Also, these Dimarzios are quieter than full sized humbuckers.

To answer your question though, hopefully, the pickguard is identical in size, shape and screw hole orientation as yours. So, that makes it direct replacement. Electronically, you would have to unwire and rewire a total of three leads: The negative and positive coming from the jack at the volume pot and the ground from the body of the guitar at the volume pot.

Hey all,

Just to let you all know there is a company out there called Grizzly tools that specializes in guitar production tools as well as offering guitar kits. They also sell Strat parts. Get this, Strat pickgaurds, the most sought after vintage/cream pearl in either s/s/s or h/s/s for $12 or you can get the black pearloid or white pearloid for $14 each. There hardware is pretty cheap as well. Go to their webpage and order a catalog, pleasse know it's huge! but as far as aftermarket strat parts at an unbeatable price they are it. I have ordered 5 pickgaurds fro my custom projects and they are all 3 ply.

Wow, so many suggestions what to choose? From my own experience the only choice, if you want noiseless pickups and authentic strat tone, are Kinman pickups. I have them fitted to my 2004 American series and 2008 American standard and can't say enough good things about them. They're not cheap but you only get what you pay for. There is a definate improvement in tone over the stock Fender pickups. I have Traditional MK 2's fitted to both guitars. The neck pickup is just superb, positions 2 and 4 retain that fender 'quack'. The middle pickup which always seemed like a after thought to me becomes a usable sound and the bridge pickup has all the Fender bite and treble but eliminates the thiness of the stock pickup, plus there's next to no hum. Check out the Kinman website for more info and Harmony Central for more user reviews.

I've heard about these PU's and have never had the chance to play with them. Thanks for sharing your experiance though, I may give them a try some day. I think they are in line with the Langcaster PU set which is about $400usd but they sound like no other PU I have ever used.
