I am interested in putting a set of Tex Mex pups on my 2001 Stratocaster Standard. I want to spend minimal cash on this swap. I was also looking at Guitarfetish pups online. Does anybody have any experience with this swap(Tex Mex or GFS pups in a MIM Strat)? Are GFS pups junk or decent? This is just a project guitar, so I want to spend just a little $$.

Jay Abend is a cool guy and some of his GFS pups that I've heard and/or installed for others have been decent, but it's usually a case in which you get what you pay for. Good luck!

I've got the Tex Mex set in my Jimmie Vaugahn strat. I like em. The bridge might be a bit bright so I would consider moving the middle tone control to the bridge pickup, same as the JV is wired. Also play around with heights. And I can't comment on the GFS pickups as I have never tried them.

I got a set of GFS overwound staggered ceramic single coils. They were a great deal for the set, so I will let you know how they sound. The bridge unit measures out at 9.12k!! That is pretty hot for a Strat unit.

Yeah, the MIM Standard's ceramic pickups measure between 6.7 and 6.9 K ohms.

I have the Tex Mex so I am biased towards them, for sure. That is my recommendation. I am not an expert on GFS pups, but there is a fair number of people that use them and like them. I fresale value is concern, it'd probably be a little higher with the Fender pups.

I bought a set of GFS overwound staggered ceramic RW/RP single coils for about $17 with white covers. Quite a nice deal!! They actually sound very close to the stock Standard Strat ceramic pups, but have more output, and drive the preamp section of my amp a little harder, for a little more grit and bite. The treble response is down a bit, but that is normal with overwound pups, from what I understand.
All in all, a nice set for the price.

I replaced the standard pickups with clothcovered wires in my japan strat with GFS premium hot. That was a upgrade in the sound for me. They had clearer sounding and punchier attack.
