Hello guys,

I was just wondering, I've got an hss strat.
The output of the hb bridge is higher then in the other positions, I'm thinking about swapping the Neck + Mid pups for my guitar.
But by changing the SCN to 69's, the output will also be lower.
The real question is, will it become a problem?( since the hb is placed almost on the body to balance volume.)

Thanks,
Steven

Try adjusting the pickup heights first.

Yeah but I actually want to be sure, as I can't do the job myself. It's going to cost me.

I am premising that even after lowering the bridge pickup, your results are still unacceptable.

Regardless of whatever pickups you choose to replace the neck and/or middle position(s) with, chances are that the bridge HB will continue to be significantly louder. Granted, they do make super high output stacked HBs for middle and neck positions but overwhelmingly, they'd be void of any dynamics and only puke and fart midrange. Your cheapest options are as follows:

1. Rewire your V/T/T configuration to a master V/T configuration and dedicate the left over tone pot as a volume pot for the bridge HB only. It can be wired in such a way that this dedicated pot will only lower the volume of the bridge pickup and not the other two. It will then be at the level you want and will blend with the rest of the pickups on command from the toggle as it always did. Yes, the master volume and tone will control it as well but as part of the overall circuit. This would be my choice.

Or...

2. Rewire the full sized humbucker from it's normally wired series configuration to parallel. This would still keep the pickup humbucking with an approximate 30% audible decrease in output. The trade off: It would also noticeably increase the pickup's overall treble response.

Or...

3. Disconnect one of the bridge pickup's coils. You'd literally decrease the pickups output by 50% because you now have a true single coil in the bridge position where needless to say, the trade offs here are that the pickup would no longer be humbucking and, it would increase somewhat in treble response too.

With any of the above 3 options, no additional parts are required.

There are many other remedies to your dilemma as well but as you've stated, $$$ is a consideration and so, your options are dictated by what you are willing to spend.

I still stand by option #1 is your best bet. You not only cheaply solve your volume problem but you gain a master tone control too.

As always, this is merely my opinion, YMMV.
