Define "cheap" ?

I'm sure that your teacher can suggest some that would be good for you.

Crate V18 is a good choice..think also about Peavey Royal8, or Epiphone ValveJunior if you gonna use it home..depends on you

well relatively cheap... epi valves are awesome. my bro got a epi valve junior head for just $100. i reluctantly say only 5 watts but it's got sweet tone, with just a single volume knob.
for a tube-transition, i don't think you NEED something ridiculous to start off with. otherwise craigslist.
talk to guitar shop people or your teacher too. that usually helps a bunch.

The Peavey Valvekings aren't bad amps either for the price.

valveking is ok, has a lot of gain and also dynamics, but it can break quickly, tubes have to be replaced after a short period of time..but compared to other amps at the similar price, the valveking is very convenient

Since your dad brought it up, I'd ask him if he knows where you can get a good tube amp...Seriously, he brought it up, he should at least be able to help you out in looking for one, cause otherwise it almost sounds like a doctor saying you need to go to a specialist, but then does nothing to help you find one....
