:) help please. i just purchased a fender 250 hd pwr head, 4-10, 1-15 cabs. used 6mo. old, manual says best hook up is a speakon from pwr hd. to 4-10, 16 g. to 1-15, does this set up really make a diff? it sounds great with just the old cables i have always used. before i go invest, i would like some oppinions, no sence in spending money for nothing, right?--wrong?

 what i'm trying to say is this. i have a fender 250 HD bass power head, that runs through a fender bass cabnet whitch holds four ten inch speakers and a tweeter. it is laced to a fender bass speaker cabnet whitch holds a single 15 inch and a tweeter. iv'e been patching them all togther with regular 1/4" cable, it takes a total of two cables, the owners manusl says for best results use a speakon cable from the power head to the first cabnet, and a 1/4" 16 guage cable out of there to the second cabnet, i was wondering if any one has used this simular set up, and is there a big difference? sorry for the confusion, thanks for the reply.

The Lord talked to me and told me to check this topic !

Ok ! I suggest that you follow the manufacturers recomendations .
The 1/4 inch cable that you are using I suppose it is speaker cable . The cable insulation should tell you the gauge (that is the wire diameter). According to the manual as you indicated for the second cabinet should be 16 gauge . Using a thinner wire (that is from 18 gauge and up ) is not a good idea because increases resistance and lowers bass response. So , if the manual says to use a specific cable for best results you should. However , if it is the gauge mentioned or bigger gauge and that is 14 gauge or less, you wont have any problems .

Jeepster,
"Speakon" is a type if connector. Originally used for connecting PA amps to PA cabs to avoid being pulled out from people loligaging around the PA equipment. They have a positive locking connector that clicks into the speakon jack and you must push the realease to unlock them. I didn't realize Fender was using these on instrument cabs. Not a new idea. EVH had Peavey use XLR mic jacks & plugs for the 5150 speaker cable. The idea is when playing at insane volume levels the cable won't blow out the back of the cab due to high sound preasure level. No reason to use speakon cables if you aren't blowing the speaker cables out the back of the cab or having people wander around behind your cab during performance. But hey, check MF as they carry them there. A picture's worth a thousand words.
