Hi,

I want to order the lace-sensor pickups set for my stratocaster. Apart from the color, representing different type of pickups (gold, blue, red, etc), the dealer asked for the output type (cold or hot output). I want to order the gold lace-sensor pickups and I'd like to know the difference between those two different specifications for the pickups. What's the difference between cold and hot output ? I'm looking for the vintage warm blues kind of tone.

Thanks

An interesting thread for sure. And yes, "Fender" Lace Sensors and "Lace" Sensors are the same internally. Both are mfg'd @ Lace Music Product to the same exact specs other than the Fender Lace Sensors have the "Fender" name embosed on the pickup cover.

Regarding hot & cold, I think the dealer meant more or less output. I have a '96 Deluxe Strat Plus which came with red/silver/blue sensors. The "red" bridge pu was way too hot for me and pretty much sounded like a humbucker while the "blue" neck pu sounded more like a P90 to my ear. I bought guitar because it plays like a dream, stays in tune, and is dead quiet which I needed for church performing.

I realy liked the "silver" sensor which had a really nice warm overwound kinda tone. I had also played a regular Strat Plus as well as the Clapton strat and really liked thd gold sensors which sounded very much like a late 50's/early 60's strat.

Soooo....I moved the silver to the bridge and added two gold sensors to the neck & mid. Man did that do the trick. It is dang near the perfect all-around strat now. The bridge is slightly hotter with a little more mids while the golds have that strat bell like tone. This combination specs out the same as the Custom Shop 54 set except dead quiet. Keep in mind the sensors are real "single coils" while all the other noiseless types are dual coils.

Lace now makes "hot" gold sensors which are slightly hotter/midsier than the silver. I tried them but much prefer the silver/gold/gold setup. The trick with sensors is to get the correct heights. Each one is different and it does take alot of trial & effort to dial in. The Fender Spec is just a starting point.

Also, if you decide to install the TBX tone control as on the Pluses, EC, etc, make sure to do Doc's TBX mod before you install. All you do is change the 82k parallel resistor to a 220k series/parallel and your TBX will work flawlessly with the passive lace pickups as it should have. Here's link for the mod.

Well worth a .20 resistor from Radio Shack and a few minutes on the soldering iron. Thanks Doc!

Sorry for the long post. But...there you go.
