I have a 1963 "L" series Strat. I am trying to sell it. One dealer stated that my guitar has "rewound" pickups because they have a copper foil visible on the bottom. I bought the guitar in 1980 at a store in North Hollywood. I just can't imagine they sold me a guitar with rewound pickups and I certainly haven't had them rewound. Is there a way to tell if the pickups have been rewound? I can't seem to figure out how to put a picture in here.

There shouldn't be any foil.

They might not be rewound. More likely someone wrapped them in foil shielding tape to reduce the amount of noise they pickup.

Back in the '70s people did things like that to old guitars. They didn't realize how valuable they'd eventually become.

Depending on the adhesive, and whether paper or cloth tape was wrapped on the coils before the foil, it may be reversible.

But it's possible that removing the foil will tear the coil. And then they would require rewinding.

To be fair to the store that sold you the guitar back in 1980, information and references were much more limited, experts were few and far between, and absolute strict originality was somewhat less important than today.
----------------------
Rewinding can be so perfect that no one can tell it was done. Unless the rewinder makes a big mistake like using the wrong gauge of wire, or wire with incorrect insulation, it can be very hard to tell.

Again, foil plays no part in rewinding. The foil may have been soldered to the pickups' ground joints. Even if you can remove the foil, disturbed solder joints have a slight affect on value.

Restorers have tricks that can make fresh solder joints look 50+ years old. The vintage market is a bit of a snake pit -- there's an element of faith and trust that sellers know the guitar's history and will disclose repairs and restorations.

In the snake pit vein, you said that one of the buyers you approached pointed out the foil. Suggesting that others didn't.

They all should have noticed that. The buyers who didn't comment may consider it such a minor mod that it doesn't have a significant affect on value.

And the buyer who said it was evidence of a rewind may have been using it as a bargaining tool to get you to accept a lower price.

Merchants want to make a profit. As do you. Just as some sellers won't disclose repairs and restorations, some buyers are less fair and scrupulous than others.
