Hi guys

I'm a bit annoyed but I will keep a lid on that as best I can.

A while I ago I came into possession of upgraded Squier with Tex-Mex pickups.. I hated them. Oh they sounded great clean.. but even the slightest distortion and they would oscillate in volume. I play 80% of the time with high gain, they had to go; so I sold the guitar.

Two days ago, I traded my 2015 Gibson SG Standard for a 2004 American Standard Stratocaster*.. it came with 'noiseless' pickups.. these are the SCN ones.. I love the SCN Rev. D I have in my FujiGen Marauder, sounds boss. kikaz.

However.. do you rem my little story about those Tex-Mex?
flip!!!!

I'm getting it most prominently in the neck pickup which is my main lead sound.. I like high gain hollow flute sounds for lead neck. TBH the neck pickup does *not* sound great.. in my Marauder I have the SCN in the bridge.. and to be fair, whatever Rev. these are the bridge does sound OK but.. not as good as the FujiGen.

idk.. I'm pretty mad.

The noiseless part is working well. I keep thinking I wish the pole pieces were adjustable, then *maybe* I could fix this myself and not have to go looking for replacement pickups and all the hassle that brings. I will NOT be buying Fender pickups after this as that would feel like rewarding the donkey for kicking me in the face :/

Oh, I didn't mention.. if I sink the pickup enough the oscillation stops but the tone, presence and ability to create gain vanishes.. much like my time spent trying to fix this problem.

I *think* they were designed only for country and blues players like the Tex-Mex.. which is of zero use to me.

So.. there is NO WAY to fix this problem. I'm done.

Note to future Fender.. PLEASE make your noiseless versions of single coils have hex key screws for pole pieces.. that means blues and country.. and even me, a grungy/high gain rock guy will be able to tune it as we see fit and.. not have the above problems.

peace

Dava
*the guitar looked like it had NEVER been set up since bought new in 2004. The action was crazy high, the truss rod nut still had walnut dust covering it like it had never been touched.

Someone must have retro fitted those pickups to a standard strat since they only came with the deluxe.
The bridge scn is wired differently to the neck and mid which is possibly why you are getting different results.
By oscillation do you mean oscillation as a result of feedback?
Maybe you are just playing too loud too close to your unit?
Have you tried different amps cables effect units etc
It may be just that these pickups enhance certain frequencies the rest of the chain is sensitive to :)

Well.. I was told it was a different neck on it*, the guy before the chap, I got it from, swapped the neck out for a maple (its all genuine Fender fyi) maybe he got a hold of a deluxe loaded scratchplate.

Nope :/ .. I wear headphones. in the OP I was saying oscillation of volume, from the moment I strike the string to the moment it is dead, the volume randomly goes up and down. like moving 10 to 8 to 10 on the volume pot.

Y'know the pleasant oscillation of a harmonic? like that but much more.. violent and the volume thing too.

I *have* been wondering if the pickup's magnetic field has been drawing the string to the fret, and so cause the vibrating string to hit higher frets.. idk.. but I tightened the two lower heel bolts just to make sure.

* I dunno if I believe the guy I got it from.. I wondered if he was too embarrassed of the 1 inch.. yes, ONE INCH action o.o and wanted to blame someone else. he was a nice guy tho. I'm saying idk but he might of been the original owner and didn't want to admit it.
I did a setup and the action is now.. 1/16th of an inch ;) .. truss rod has correct relief. trem floats and returns to pitch in d standard with two springs. nice!

Yea that sounds odd.
I know what you mean re pickup height.
If you plug the strat straight into two different amps without effects at moderate gain is it ok?
I am not saying it is not the pickups and it seems like you have plenty of other nice guitars to compare it to...... :D

hehe :) .. I have a collection of around 40 guitars. The FujiGen and Mex Strat I've had since I was 19/20yo

I made an audio file to share what it sounds like. the second strike, struck correctly, but the rest not, i also struck the A to give a comparison.. it doesn't oscillate up the neck but in lower down the neck you can hear a slight but definite oscillation like the E. This happens all over the neck depending on the string used.

The Low E here is the clearest example of what i'm talking about.

Yip got that one.
Something unusual going on there.
What is it like clean?
Prob not much help... sounds a bit like you are overloading the front end just a little to much causing some type of parasitic oscillation :)

But like you pointed out before.. I gotta a lot of guitars to choose from hehe.. none of these do this.. in fact none in my entire collection. The Tex-Mex were even worse, doing that all up and down the neck except when struck open.

clean? welp I have to admit, the Tex-Mex were one of, if not thee, best clean sound I have heard. These are a bit.. thin.. compared to the Tex-Mex.

When I go clean I am thinking.. Dick Dale lead sound but a bit cleaner. (thats cos he uses 13's)
I use a Line 6 Spider II 30w combo on the insane channel with usually no pedals, and none used on the recording.
