So I managed to get my hands on the electronics of a vintage 197(3?) Strat, also managed to get a colleague to (crudely) attach it to the body of a squire, and now am in possession of an unusual guitar.

Now I may be asking for the impossible here, but I would really like to know if I could do anything to clean these pickup covers/around the pickups on the pickguard without doing any real harm. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

but feel free to feast your eyes upon whatever you would call this thing

There are different methods (bleachings, sandings & polishings...) for cleaning, but I don't think you can get those cleaned - looks like the yellowing has penetrated so deep that the cover would wear through before you find white...

So, you could embrace the aged look (with maybe a less contrasting pickguard) or get new covers (those old ones should come off easy, but I don't take any responsibility if you break the pickups).

I sorta like the workhorse look the instrument has. I'd call it a guitar.

I never felt such a strange combination of admiration, and disgust
but I digress

they don't come off easy..
kinda--really scared to take them off
seems the crud has fused the covers to the pickup themselves..

ive also just received the information that the original guitar was actually a '69
very surprised

Wow... and yuck... at the same time (wowyuck..?)...

Maybe a Zippo fluid dampened cotton rag rubbing (or a bit coarser; felt pad maybe) would eventually take those to a semi-hygienic level. Might also soften the crud some. But still, all at your own risk.
And that semi-hygienic is just about as far as I'd go. Those pickups are the mother, home and all cousins of mojo, and a new guiding star for artificial relicers.

It looks like a previous owner was a smoker. lighter fluid may be your best bet.
