BTW, it's common, even normal, to not know the difference between "split" and "tap". People have been confabulating those terms ever since Bill Lawrence introduced 4-conductor humbuckers back in the late '60s early '70s.

Manufacturers and retailers write the phrase "coil tap" when they mean "coil split". (Gibson uses the terms interchangeably and randomly.)

Few people have ever even seen a tapped single-coil, and a tapped humbucker is like Bigfoot -- there's no reason they couldn't exist but no proof that they do.

(If someone is aware of a real world tapped 'bucker, please please please enlighten me. I've had internet people tell me I'm stupid for even thinking they're possible.)

Here, let me Google that for you.

Nevermind

At least one company has made tappable humbuckers. (Though I find their claim that their tapped mode accurately sounds like a single-coil to be dubious at best.)

May be others. Didn't bother to look

In all that crap I wrote, it might be easy to overlook my comments about the differences between modern and original-spec Wide Range Humbuckers. And I didn't delve into how the construction affects the sound.

Original-spec WRHB's sound more like P90's than regular humbuckers do. In parallel mode, even more so.

Compared to your modern "regular humbucker under a big cover" WRHB's, original-spec will be brighter but also fuller, more open sounding, more dynamic. A bit P90-ish. In parallel mode a little more P90-ish. In split mode they'll be more Tele-ish.

The trade-off is they can't sound exactly like a normal PAF-based humbucker.

Just in case you don't know -- you can't do any of these switching options with stock Wide Range Humbuckers. They only have 2 conductors per pickup and are risky to convert to 4 conductors.

Fender does the humbucker split with Enforcers on some HH Tele models.
And the wire system on WRH Reissues is similarly visible in the backside of the pickup, so DIY split rewiring a WRH Reissue is possible.

But, (a) I would not recommend it to anyone who doesn't have proper skills and (b) there is a major difference between a split stock WRH Reissue and a split Creamery Upgraded Reissue - the latter has different magnets and 'vintage specs' windings.
