Definately not the same...
Texas Specials are higher output than the TexMex's.
Also the texas specials seem to be a little brighter than TexMex...

They are both good pickups in my opinion...
Best thing to do is go try them both and see what YoU think.
Go plugin & play a Roadhouse Strat (has Texas Specials)
& then play an American Standard HSS
(has 2 custom staggard Tex Mex's on the neck & middle).

To put a name on these pickups...
Tex Mex pickups are what Jimmy Vaughn uses,
And Texas specials are SRV's.

I thought the Tex Mex bridge and neck were actually higher output than the Tex Specials?? Could be wrong, but not sure.

Technically u are correct ratboy... sorry didnt mean to confuse anyone...
They are actually very close to the same output depending on which pickup we are talking about.
(neck - middle - bridge)
The TexMex bridge pickup is hotter than the TS bridge pickup
DC resistance of 7.4K vs the TS at 6.50K - 7.10K

The middle pickups are the other way around but only slightly.
TS middle w/ DC resistance of 6.5K is hotter than the TexMex middle of 6.4K.

Finally, the TexMex neck pickup w/ DC Resistance of 6.4K is slightly hotter than the TS neck pickup at 6.2K.

Yet when I play them both 1 then the other side by side through the same amp.
The texas specials seems hotter to me because they have a brighter sound.
When slightly distorted or even not, the effect is a sound that sizzles & cuts through (to me anyway).

When I bought my JV Strat I played a Roadhouse and Lonestar Strat at the same time, I would say the Tex-Mex pups definitely have more "bite" than the TS's. Not sure about the exact level of output but to me, the Tex-Mex pups sounded more "Strat-y" than the TS's, if that makes sense.
