Hi, newbie from Hampshire UK here. I have recently aquired a nice 1988 Strat with Texas Specials but which I find has a dodgy middle pickup. After a period of working normaly, the pu has a habit of suddenly not working - not actually cutting out while playing but after switching from another pickup and sometimes when plugging in for the first time. I changed the (import) 5-way for a genuine Fender item, re-soldered all the joints, cleaned the pots and checked all wiring for internal breaks. No change And I really don't want to change the pickups as they sound so good.

To cut a long story short and dont ask how I discovered this, but I found that, if I place my battery-operated screwdriver on one of the centre pu polepieces and give the motor a quick blast, the pu instantly springs to life and appears to work fine for the next day or so.

So, for the more technically minded amongst you, can anyone explain what is happening here and whether or not there is a permanent fix to the problem? I don't want the pu to fail mid-gig.

Hi there possibly an intermittent in the windings.
The pressure you apply flexes it enough for it to work for a while.
Assuming it is the pickup and not the wiring etc which can be tested with an ohmmeter when faulty the quickest solution is a replacement.
Middle pickups are available on ebay and similar :D
