Hey guys :)
I've just acquired a pickguard that comes loaded with a set of CS pickups and some online sherlocking has thrown up the likelihood that they're a set of CS Vintage 69s. Awesome!
Here's the evidence:
1. Grey bottom bobbins
2. Staggered poles
3. No bevelling on the poles
4. Black/cream cloth wire on every pickup
5. No red or blue pickups position markers
However, one mystery remains and if anyone can shed some light on this I'd be really grateful.
They each have some handwriting that looks like the number "54". Any ideas why this us there and what it might mean?
Here's a pic:

Help me out!!!
:)

Thanks for the reply @stratele52
Good to know I might want to upgrade the pots etc
But I'm still mystified by the handwriting on the bobbins... :?
Any ideas folks?

Well with the stickers on they are after market and not 54s and most likely 69s as you have mentioned. Chances are someone outside fender has written that either mistakenly or It may mean 5.4k so what is the dc resistance? :D

That's a good shout @jimmy_james
The DC output of 69s is meant to be 5.8k but a slight deviation in that could well explain the handwriting.
If anyone could confirm that CS pickups do vary slightly in output that would be really helpful (and interesting!) too...
Thanks guys!

All pickups can exhibit minor variations from their published specs -- put a meter on them to determine their actual DCR.

I doubt they're '54s. Those pickups feature beveled pole pieces.

Okay; latest update...
My buddy Graham measured the individual pickup's DC output and they all come in at just over 5.3k!
So yep, it looks like the handwritten 54 could well be someone wanting to make sure these pickups were matched to make a set of slightly lower output Vintage 69s.
Thanks to all of you who helped me unravel this particular mystery - much appreciated guys!

Put them in your guitar and let 'em rip!

The refinish colour is...
Nah, that would just spoil the surprise
But let's just say that it definitely scores big on the "awesome scale" #shamelessshowoff
I'll be back on Xmas Day to reveal all...

I realize I'm late to this thread... But, FWIW... I have owned MANY CS69's that measured between 5.3k and 5.4k. In fact, many more than I have had that measured 5.8k. I've also owned 3 sets of Abby's hand wound CS69's and ALL of them were between 5.3k and 5.4k. Make me wonder who decided that they were supposed to be 5.8k to begin with...
