Does the Shawbucker have 4 leads so that I can split it? I'm buying a Strat that the owner dropped tex mex pups in the rhythm & mid positions and a Shawbucker @ the bridge. I'm interested in hearing this combination especially in pos. 4 that includes the middle pup with the humbucker. I've owned 2 Jimmie Vaughan Strats and like the tex mexes. After all, pups are just a certain blend of alnico magnet with copper wire wrapped around them so many times. Whether Abigail does it or a new girl @ the bench, some turn out to be more of a gem than others. "Scatterwound" of just straight wound back and forth like a fishing reel, makes not that much difference. "Luck of the draw." I wonder how many players actually bought those Seymour Duncans that are wound with pure silver wire? They probably sound like $@!&. Later.

I question the idea of splitting the coils on a Shawbucker.
It's a low output humbucker - the DCR is lower than a Texas Special single coil pickup.
If you look at the service diagrams of all the guitars featuring a Shawbucker you'll see that there isn't a split coil option on any of them. There's a reason behind that.

+1

The coils, when split, will sound pretty lame. Better to go with something that has a skosh more beef.

I understand now. The shawbucker, being designed to blend evenly with the single coils, would be a weak sound at best if cut in half. That makes perfect sense & I'm glad that it's that way. I notice a shawbucker uses alnico 2 which is pretty mellow sounding as well. I can't wait to hear the Fender humbucker now. So the middle pup will be an RWRP so that the neck/mid combination will be silent. I'm thinking that the RWRP would blend with one side of the humbucker or the other. I guess that pos. 4 <mid & bridge together> will be silent as well. Maybe less quack, not sure. I've never owned a strat with a humbucker of any kind on it. Anyway, thanks for the good information about that shawbucker.

The Shawbucker equipped guitars are also fitted with a dual gang 250/500k volume pot for properly balanced sound.
