Hey guys! I want to buy a new electric guitar but i'm can't decice myself about what type of pickup (single coil or humbucker) i should choose. I know that each one of the pickups has its own proprieties and advantages and disavantages but can you advise me?
The type of music I wanna play is essencially rock but i could play other styles too. Some people told me that humbucker is appropriate for rock because the rhytm part, as blues for instance. But for solos it's better a single coil.
Generally what do you think about this subject?

Thanks all, your comments will be appreciated :D

You could do both: Get a guitar with a full sized humbucker and a single coil or, you could get a humbucker that has the capability of being electronically split to single coil operation.

We could talk forever about what music you specifically play and what kind of pickups are being used for it. Your best course of action is to play as many different guitars as you can because eventually, you'll be able to answer your own question the best.

I agree with Martian....try a bunch of different styles and types.
I have a bunch of different guitars 'cause I can't stick with one sound or style. It doesn't even have to be an expensive guitar. Find what you are comfortable, don't let anyone decide for you what your style, sound or style is.
That's a personal decision only you can make.
Good luck

Eventually you may own both.

I have acoustic guitar--with no pickups.
Humbuckers (including one that is wired for the coil to be in either series (normal) or parallel-which is like two single coils next to each other--it is a different sound.)
Single coil (Mustang--and the pickups can be put in or out of phase with each other.)
and a bass that has one of each.

So play lots of guitars, and see what you like best.
Maybe you'll decide you only like one type, maybe you'll get, as suggested above, a humbucker that has a coil splitting option--so you can either on the same guitar. Maybe you'll get both.

Just have fun with it.

I have always used a humbucker in the bridge of my strats.
My 93 american strat has a mini-humbucker in it.
(humbucker that fits into a single coil space)

I am buying 2 Amer standards right now with Humbuckers in the bridge.
They are great for getting ballsy crunch...
u kno like that 'dun dun dun' metallica sorta thing. lol
I plan to mod so that when I pull up on the tone knob
it engages what is known as a coil tap (Martian mentioned this above).

Now I will be able to toggle between a humbucker & single coil in the bridge position.
Just another bullet in the old 6 shooter. lol

If this will be a new guitar for you, I'd highly recommend a H-S-S configuration. You can really get the best of both worlds that way. You will still have the neck & neck/mid single coil tones which are great for solos & melodic playing.

You can have the bridge humbucker for rockin' songs. You will want to test the guitar to make sure the bridge humbucker is not way louder thanthe single coils.

Hope this helps,
