I bought three Fender (CTS) pots to load a new pickguard for a MIM strat.

I'm trying to gather info to understand how the resistance of the pot influences tone. So far I understand the tone-pot, but will the resistance also influence tone on the volume-pot or is it just as it says a volume pot?

the first pot measures 225K
the second measures 265K
the third measures 285K

Will it make much of a difference which of the three I use for volume and which for tone on bridge/middle pickup?

What would be your order and why?

Thanks for your help,

Ruub

I doubt that there will be any significant sonic difference regardless of which pot is installed in which position. More important would be the value and composition of the tone cap.

I'll put the high resistance at volume to maintain, in theory, pickups impedance.

Do you hear a difference ? I don't know.

Thank you both for your reply. I'll use the higher value as the volume pot. The fender set included a 0.22 cap, is that one any good?

The .022 and .033 are cap values that I prefer -- they provide a more linear treble roll-off and, when the tone control is fully attenuated, don't decrease the overall amplitude of the output of the pickups to the degree that higher values seem to. My observations apply to true single-coil pickups and DiMarzio stacked-coil humbuckers. They may or may not hold true for others like Fender's Vintage Noiseless, SCN's, or the new N3's.
