So I bought a set of Fender Schaller-type strap locks online and I'm having trouble getting them to lock. The buttons aren't sliding all the way into the locks so both lock mechanisms aren't engaging the buttons which is allowing the locks to slip off the buttons. The problem is the buttons are either slightly oversize or the locks are slightly under. Whatever the reason the result is the buttons aren't sliding all the way into the locks and seating no matter how hard I push. And yes I'm lifting the spring loaded locking mechanism as I slide the lock over the button on the guitar body.

Anyone else ever run into this? Is there a fix short of returning them and getting something else??

Send them to the seller.

Ok I went ahead and removed the buttons off the guitar, and  inserted them into the locks so I could try and see where the interference was.  It was obvious that the buttons were "bottoming out" before seating fully into the lock body preventing the lock shaft from engaging the button head.

The easiest way to try and fix it was to file a bit off the button tops.  To do this I laid a file on the bench and ran  the buttons over the file.  By running the buttons over the file rather than vice versa ensured I kept the button flat to the file.  Any way, about 20 or so  seconds per button and I had removed enough material to eliminate the interference -- problem solved!   Reinstalled the buttons on the guitar and connected the strap--everything"s good to go now.

Yes, but not enough to notice. If you saw them and I hadn't told you what I did, you"d never know.. Even if it was noticeable, no one would ever see it as the top of the button (the part I filed) is inside the lock when the strap is on.

You shouldn't of had to; but at least you figured the best way to resolve the issue to your satisfaction.

Concur 100%, but based upon my Internet research I've come to the conclusion that my issue was very, very uncommon. I simply got a set that was manufactured slightly out of spec--it happens. In the end it was just easier to fix them than to return them.
