i know these two ideas seem to not be aiming different goals but ive got a strat with fat 50s in . i fitted them myself its a 08 start . im tempted with changing bridge pickup for a texas special to get a bit more out of it . was going t try a ssl5 but think it will be to much tbh . but another idea i have is to put some 69s in it and maybe use a boost pedal . i love the clean sound you get from the 69s through a hot rod deluxe. the only problem with this is i like to keep my rig as simple as poss . less pedals the better. just wonder if you guys got any opinions

The CS '69 set is too tame for my taste -- they do cleans fairly well and they sound great for R&B, funk, and Motown but lack the grunt for serious rock work IMO. I prefer my Fat '50s over Texas Specials but there's no dispute that they're hotter in output than the FF's, especially the TS bridge coil. I'm guessing that it would be a good sonic fit with the middle and neck pickups from the FF set. All will respond well to a boost pedal though the TS's can quickly become too gritty -- some adjustment of your amp's EQ controls may be necessary.

Oddly enough a certain Ritchie Blackmore preferred lower output pickups because they sounded sweeter.
Give 'em a push into a hard driven amp (in Blackmore's case an Akai tape recorder in line driving the input of his amp, and you've got one of the quintessential rock sounds.
Love 'em or loathe them, you cannot say that Deep Purple's guitar sound lacked balls.

The OP is pretty specific about wanting to keep things manageable.

You could try the "No Load" pot for the bridge also, a bit cheaper than new pups.

He did use Quarterpounders later on.
All the earlier Deep Purple and Rainbow stuff was done using stock Fender pickups, and the Strats he used were late 60s/70s models, so nothing high output.
