I am thinking about taking out my tremelo system in my MIM strat and installing a hardtail.

What I would like to know is if this as easy as I think it should be?

Also can anyone think of a downfall of doing this?

I never use the tremelo anyway.

Please I would like as much feedback as I can get.

the simplest thing to do is to block the trem with a wooden block and take of the arm

then it easy to un-block it again incase you wanna sell the guitar sometime

I fully agree... I have a 93 Strat that I have used as a hardtail for years by locking the trem all the way back... I am going to set it floating again very soon... No need to replace, simply set it up that way...
Probably several ways to do it.
Maybe a fixed peice of metal rather than a spring back there?

It isn't even necessary to block the tremolo. All you have to do is to put 5 springs on the tremolo and then, tighten the two screws of the spring claw until the claw is flush up against the wood inside the tremolo cavity. Make sure of course that your six bridge plate screws allow the tremolo to sit flush on the guitar body. Believe me, that tremolo won't move unless you're using really heavy strings or you have super human bending strength.
