My acoustic has been great for decades, but recently some of the open strings are buzzing. I've even changed to thinner strings but it's still rattling a little.

When the neck shifts, what tool do I need to adjust the truss rod on an acoustic? And what direction should I go to help clear the frets?

Short answer
You need to learn how to read the neck curve before doing any adjustment .
If you are not sure , see a qualified luthier.

Thanks for the advice...But I figured out the issue. It was the frets. There were REALLY deep gouges around the 2'd and 3rd frets which resulted in any open chord buzzing like crazy. I got a fret level kit and now it sounds like new. HUGE relief as this guitar is what I learned on and was a bit of a family heirloom. Not expensive but lots of history behind it.
