Hi,
This is my first post. I just received my Ron Emory parlor guitar and I love it! I am starting up guitar again after not playing for many years. My question is this, is there a very thin plastic coating on Fender acoustic pickguards? The pickguard seems strange, dull with some texture, so I tried to remove what I thought was a coating but it's not really coming off. It does seem to be very shiny underneath. Thanks for any help! :? I hope I didn't scratch my brand new pickguard. I used my finger nail...carefully.

Yes, you just have to peel the plastic off.

By the way, how do you like it? I have a Ron Emory Parlor in Butterscotch and take it whenever the family goes on vacation. Great projection for a smaller guitar.

Do you have the Sunburst or the Butterscotch?

:) I'm very pleased with mine. It sits on a guitar stand in my day room, and I just pick it up at odd moments throughout the day and play and/or practice.

I was shopping for some new recording gear last October, when I saw it (sun burst) hanging on a rack. I played a Barnes & Mullins parlor guitar during the 60's until I fell for a dreadnough (Guild D40), like so many of my generation.... so it was like stepping back in time... which is probably why after playing a few licks on this, my wife asked if I realized I'd been playing it for over an hour. So we retired to a quiet room for a final check before buying.

There's just one "dead" note where the sustain fails, probably because it's the helmholtz frequency of the body... the c# (5th string, 4th fret)... if you hum into the sound hole, it really bounces back. At first the top E and the B were somewhat out of balance, but whilst experimenting with differing strings I put in a new set of bridge pins, while making sure the ball ends were seating properly. I didn't expect them to make any difference (why would they?), but they are Tusq pins and the balance problem went away, and stayed away, even when I replaced the original strings.... so go figure!

The weakest part of the whole deal are the $5 machine heads, but I have a set of a similar style, but better quality. They might be a tad heavier, but nothing major so they should suit it fine. I'm guessing they are 1:14 ratio and 1:18 would probably have been better. The spare ones I have are 1:15.

But it's a gem of an instrument at the price.

One final issue is going to be amplification. I play piedmont style, and I'm not using steel finger picks, even though I'm playing very aggresively. So I've destroyed my nails. I'm thinking of fitting a pickup and using an acoustic amp.

I'm posting a separate question about that here...

Great job Fender & Ron... so much about it suggests it should be recognized as a classic.

regards
all.... sláinte...

Oh.... the pickguard is just so bizarre... it's so thick, it must be having a impact on the ability of the strings to drive the top... yet Fender/Ron make a point about using scalloped bracing, and I see it only uses one tone bar for the lower bout...... so why stick such a thick chunk of plastic on the top... because so much of the rest of the guitar shows real engineering...
