Hey guys I'm newish to playing guitar and I just bought a brand new CD-60CE at a local shop here today. They literally had just received the shipment as I got there and the salesman opened it up and removed all of the packaging on the guitar and handed it to me. It looked perfect to me, but when I brought it home and looked at the back of it I noticed a weird finish blemish, any idea if it's possible to get it out? Or is this fairly normal?

Return it for refund or replacement is what I would do.

Is this guitar a Sunburst? Is the "weird finish blemish" possibly where the stain sprayer had clogged up and/or stopped, then restarted as the guitar was moving on a production line? Giving the finish a "strange wood grain" look at first glance, and more noticeable as an actual finish flaw on a closer inspection?

I ask; because I have a CD-60 (not electric), in Sunburst, and I have that very flaw myself. And it is under the clear coat, so nothing short of stripping the back of the guitar completely down, and re-paint/re-finish, will fix it.

Had the flaw been in the clear coat itself, I would have sent mine back. But the stain spray flaw (to me any way), looks more like a funky wood grain at a glance, and is on the back, so it does not bother me because I like everything else about the guitar.
I consider mine unique and one of a kind---so my obsessive compulsive brain will accept the flaw.

You DO make me wonder if our two guitars were finished on the same day, with the same sprayer...and if so, how long before someone at the plant noticed their nozzle was screwing up, and how many guitars have this finish flaw.

You know; guitars manufactured in Indonesia, and other Asian countries might not have the reputation they do, if Quality Control in their plants would stop the badly flawed guitars from hitting the warehouses and shelves. But I imagine it's just like every other greedy corporation, and they just have their eye on the Revenue.

Sharp frets, and shoddy wiring tend to be the biggest complaints in lower end guitars. They HAVE to know this by now, yet do nothing to correct it.
You'd think Fender would step in and lay down the law on quality control, regardless of where the guitar is manufactured and/or what name is stenciled larger on the headstock, because the Fender name is still on there as well.

P.S.- Sorry for the rant...you got me going now. LOL!

Good point. There can be quite a learning curve in dealing with an outsource, especially when you cross major cultural barriers. You often work through consultants at first and they may or may not have your best interests at heart. They'll dangle the ridiculously low production costs, cheap import fees and all that at you. But they won't tell you how to effectively manage people and demand quality in the country(s) in question.

You may send in some of your own people as ex-pat managers, but if they don't know the language and customs, they may be ineffective at best, or come home with their tails between their legs as a worst case. Even the Japanese ran into these issues when they started having guitars made in Korea and then China. Different culture, etc. Once our companies learned how to operate in Korea and the PRC, quality began to increase rapidly. Nowadays, Korean guitars made in their so-called premium factories are typically very high quality.

I've noticed in the Squire forums here that people are saying Fender's Indonesian instruments are improving as well. But there's still corner cutting such as insufficiently cured wood and poor fretwork that seems to get through. My guess is that they let the lowest end stuff pass because no one expects much of it ... if you bring it back, they toss it at that time and give you a new one.

Hope I don't catch crap for this .... :? OK here's the thing, it's a $300 acoustic electric guitar with some great features. IMO, Fender has been moving towards making their acoustics more 'playable' at that price point. One little blemish on the back of a $300 A/E? If it plays and sounds good, I would personally keep it and be perfectly happy.
