Good morning,

I am trying to find out some info on my Dad's Shenandoah 12 string (someday to be mine officially) and my California series La Brea. The Serial# on the Shenandoah is 15888 and the best info I could find is during production there was a big box with plates pre-stamped with serial numbers. When you needed a plate, you reached in and grabbed one so the order of the number is only an approximate production date. I believe there was a production date (or at least a (month/year) marked under the neck. I noticed this when we had it apart a few years ago. Is there any good information that would help me narrow down a production date/year? (Type of hardware installed, hidden markings etc..) Also, the intonation is way off. The neck is straight and the height of the strings is comparable to all other guitars I have. Also, the top really needs some TLC. Any recommendations on where to have it restored?

As for the history of the La Brea, I bought it as "used" from Skip's Music in Sacramento. Each year they host a huge vendor show at the State Fairgrounds so the manufacturers can show off their new stuff. They bring demos to show off and then Skip's sells them as used after the show. I happened to be in the store when they hung the La Brea (Maple) up. I was first to get my hands on it (there were 3 other waiting to see it too) and I never let it go. It sounds great, looks great and plays really great. I am trying to figure out what year it was made and how many were produced. The serial number on the label inside is 90300462. The production date stamped on the neck is 19930001. I bought the guitar in March of 1994.

From what I can come up with about this model is that it is part of the California series and basically is an acoustic guitar with a Strat neck. They were produced from 1987 to 1996 depending on the finish/color. Mine was made from 1992 to 1995. What info I was able to gather about the serial numbers is little and not from necessarily reliable sources (I heard from a friend that….). The info I did get about the serial numbers is similar to the above except the serial numbers are prestamped on the label. Can anyone verify that and does anyone have any further info on the La Brea models? I do love mine.

Thanks,

Martin

Hi lndeatr (Martin),
Don't ya hate when ya write something out and it takes a litle while and then when you hit "post" the website gives you an error screen? well.....I do, but let me try this again.

Unfortunately, there isn't alot more info here at fender besides this : http://www.fender.com/support/articles/acoustic-instruments-product-dating/ in terms of serial numbers.
In terms of production numbers, I imagine other companies are similar, but those numbers are only really given out on special limited edition runs where the number is part of the whole deal. What I CAN tell you about La Brea's in general is that there were many many. I can attest to that simply having inspected many many of them.

So sorry I can't provide you with much on those two subjects, but hopefully the spec's below will help just a little. All the best,
rob
