Novice here that just got a brand new Sonoran SCE delivered and it appears to be unplayable out of the box. It looks like all strings are striking on the 14th fret (right where the neck meets the body). I tried adjusting the truss to see if I needed to counteract neck "hump", but no luck (BTW, the neck doesn't appear to have a noticeable curve looking down it). I think I fully spun the truss nut both ways to see if I could get an improvement. Am I missing something? It is literally equivalent to holding your finger across the 14th fret -- you can't play anything lower on the neck.

OK, went to Guitar Center and verified that the guitar was a lemon. The best guess is that the body may have warped because of humidity issues since production. Got a replacement Sonoran delivered today. This one actually plays with open strings and can be tuned. However, I'm seeing a familiar buzzing on the upper frets. Now, if you play on the 12th fret, you're gonna get the 14th fret playing again :( The truss adjustment doesn't help. Is every Sonoran a lemon? I'm hoping it's just the case of a tall fret, but it's probably no coincidence that it's the 14th fret where the neck is attached. Side note: the buzzing problem is more pronounced on higher strings (makes me think that the guitar is also warped).

Took the second candy apple Sonoran to Guitar Center. The great tech there inspected it and said that frets were very inconsistent after doing the gauge measurements. She also discovered the biggest problem -- the Fender wound strings were buried completely in the nut when they should be half-in/half out, making the action way too low. She said that the only remedy for keeping it would be a laser fret polish/leveling for the whole neck (a $200+ option). Luckily, they had a new black Sonoran SCE in stock, and it played perfectly. Lesson learned... always buy the goods in person. The downside is that Guitar Center (and most stores) only stock these in basic natural and black. You have to gamble taking factory shipments for the fancy colors.

The sonoran I purchased had a bad nut. By the looks of it I'd say it was cut by a blind person. I installed a graph tech nut and it solved that problem. Then I adjusted the rod a tiny bit and took the bridge out and sanded it down a bit to get the action where I wanted it.
