I am looking to change my strings on my acoustic. I have a relatively heavy gauge on there now .13. I am starting to play a bit more blues on my acouctic. My current strings have a wound G string and I am finding it harder to bend with accuracy.

One of the employees at the music store that I frequent suggested going with a set that has an unwound G string. I don't want to change the gauge of the rest of my strings as I like the tone that I am getting from them.

I have a couple of questions.

How many people have done this?

Will this require a truss rod adjustment as I would suspect that the G string would have a different guage being unwound.

Thanks for you input

As far as I can remember the heaviest plain (unwound) string is only about an 18, the G String on your guitar is probably about a 26. The D string on your guitar is probably in the 32-36 range. Going from an 18 to a 32-36 would be quite a jump, it would not be impossible and a neck adjustment may not be needed.
I would suggest either going to a lighter set (I believe 11's give you an unwound G option) or getting the action on your acoustic lowered.

My personal recommendation would be to go with a lighter set (11's) that has an unwound G and build up the strength in your fingers.

I thought that I would have to go to a lighter gauge. I didn't want to give up the tone that I was getting from the heavier guages. But I can't bend with the accuracy that I want. Guess you got to give up a little to get a littel back

I'm not confident in getting the action lowered on my acoustic by the guitar tech at my local store. He is great at working on both my P Bass and Strat. I'm just not sure how many acoustics he works on.

Thanks for the input Chet.
