tried elixirs, don't like them, too slippery, I bend and waggle the strings when I'm playing, chords too, the slippery elixirs don't have the purchase for bending or vibrato, particularly with chords. Have a set of Martin 1100's on at the moment but I have a set of fender 1200's like the set which was on when I bought it to put on when they've worn out. Like the combination of heavy top, light bottom on this guitar. 012 016 024 032 042 052. compare the martin set 011 015 023 032 042 052. I love this guitar, I've been playing for 35 years and this is the guitar I've been waiting for alll my life.

I'll add another vote for the Fender Sonoran SCE. The guitar plays nice (thin, "Stratocaster" style neck), and sounds pretty good. Very nicely balanced between low end and high end, and the built in transducer does a fine job when you plug the guitar in. You get a solid spruce top with "scalloped" bracing, and a good spruce top will open up over time.

What you don't get is a whole lot of volume. This is not an instrument I would recommend for a bluegrass jam, but works great for mellow acoustic styles, and perfect for backing up singing. I got to compare it to a lower-line Martin (D1GT, About $950) last week, and the Martin stomped it for volume and presence. Of course, the Martin was about 3X the price too.

Of course, if you're playing amplified, the volume issue doesn't really matter, and out of the box, the Sonoran sounds great plugged-in.

I haven't had a chance to play with any of the other Fender acoustics, but for the price ($350 typical retail, but can be had for less if you shop), the Sonoran is not a bad guitar at all.

I own a Fender CD220 SCE and I would recommend the guitar. Good price and I can get some nice sounds out of it both plugged and unplugged.

I also own a CD220sce and it's a great guitar for the money. You can see it in my profile pic.

It really is a great time to be a new guitar buyer, the features that are available now for low prices are astounding, when I was first starting out a solid top instrument would run close to $500, now the same money will get you a solid top with performance worthy electronics to boot!

To the original poster: yes I'd recommend that Fender's acoustics be on your list of stuff to try. Guitar playing is a very subjective thing, play everything in your price range you can get your hands on and go with what grabs you and you don't want to put down.

Happy shopping!

What Zach said. I went to the store looking to buy a Takamine I had been eyeing. I literally played every acoustic in the shop $200 - $1000. I left with my Fender. I was completely blown away since I always hated Fender acoustics. They have come a long way.

I bought my girlfriend a CD60 SB for her to learn on. It was reasonably priced and plays better than I would expect. I used to own an FJ-70 that was awesome!!! If I ever see another I am grabbing it for sure.

I bought my Sonoran bucket from watching youtube reviews. Not from playing one. This is my second acoustic, and I am a self taught hobbyist, so my 2 cents isn't worth much, but I am happy with my purchase. The only one I have to impress is my wife and my ears, and so my standards are low, but the Sonoran sure beats the old Johnson I had to learn on, and I haven't touched my Gretsch or Strat since I got the Sonoran. I would recommend a Fender acoustic to anyone.

I'd recommend you try to find a Fender DG200 SCE. It's a special run available at Guitar Center. Sounds fantastic and I really like the way it feels and plays. Not a Taylor or Martin or Guild - but it's also priced below $400. A lot of us who have played one bought one - check out the discussion thread here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=23231

Had a '68 Kingman back in the day. awesome tone but low volume presumably due to the internal torsion bar in the body. In 91 I purchased a Fender Montara which is much like the Sonoran with the thinner body. great tone but again, not a bluegrass guitar and the preamp sucks by today's standards.

My latest is a 2013 Kingman SCE with the Fishman Presys preamp. (summer blowout pricing.) Now this is loud! And plugged in sounds great in any of my tube amps. (including the Champ 600.)

I've never played a Fender acoustic with 3x3 headstock, but I guess they would be ok. I just like the cool factor of the California Series.
