HI everyone! New here and a relatively new guitar player. Open chords and such, maybe some scale work. Trying to figure it out. Enjoying it very much. Anyway, I bought a GDC 200 SCE and was wondering if anyone has insight to this guitar? I got it for $130 with a Freedom hard case and think that I got a pretty good deal. I would appreciate anything you guys/gals can provide! Thanks a lot.

If it's in good shape and playable, i.e. neck not warped, neck angle good, frets in good shape, action good or at least still has room left to make adjustments then I'd say you got a very good deal. Especially given that new hardshell cases start at about $70 (canadian) and you got both for $130 This means you got a solid top guitar (solid top is a good thing) with built in pick-up (I assume that works) for about $60.

Best advice: if you know any working musicians in your area go to the repair person that they go to. There shouldn't be any charge to assess the instrument.

Have fun,

Thanks for your reply! I thought it was a decent deal when I googled it I found the "retail" price at like $549 which I figured meant it probably sold for around 350 to 400. It has a ding or 2, well maybe a few more, and now is getting some strum marking on it but the neck seems ok. Thought about getting a pick guard for it. The electronics do work but I don't have an acoustic amp, only the Fender Princeton 65 SS that I got for $70 and was told it won't really sound right through a regular amp. Action is probably a little too high but was told it was not too bad. How can you tell it is a solid top guitar? I guess I can't really tell but I think it looks pretty cool with the pointy florentine cutaway and dark sides and back.

Sounds like you did indeed get yourself a fantastic deal. To check for a solid top look at the edge of sound hole straight if you look towards the bridge end you should either see continuous grain or the layers that make up a laminate top. At a $549 retail price my assumption is that a spruce top is solid.

Even if it is a laminate you still have an incredible deal: a guitar in decent shape with built in electronics and a hard case for $130, that's virtually unheard of.

Pickguards are a cheap and relatively easy DIY project. You can order a standard shape peel and stick one for about 10 bucks from Stewart-Macdonald or another parts supplier or order a sheet of peel and stick material and design and cut your own unique shape.

Cheers, good luck, have fun and post a pic of your new guitar!

I am trying to get them uploaded as I haven't ever hosted any pics online. Be here soon.
Ok now got them uploaded so here are my cheap guitars. A bit dirty but playable. Along with my Solid State Princeton 65. Got that amp with a BC Rich Son of the Beast Avenge for $100. It was pretty beat up but he wanted $70 for the amp and I wasn't leaving it there for $30!

I own this same guitar, bought it new 5 years ago. You can see me play it on YouTube. You did get a good deal. And it does have a solid top, that was a big factor in me buying it. I can't recall if I paid $399 or $499 for it, it was one of those. I got mine from guitar center.com. Hope you enjoy yours!!

These seem to be pretty uncommon. I cant find any info on these anywhere. I just brought home a badly neglected and abused model that needs some TLC. I strung it up to see how it sounded to decide if its going to campfire played or fueled. (it has impact damage, splits, cracks and delaminations...tough)

Aside from the sheer abuse this thing took, everything works, it sounds nice and plays like a dream. It sounds beautiful through an amp. I'm going to repair it, but not restore...going to be my camping tag along....not bad for $25, fresh strings and elbow grease (and likely souvenier stickers to cover repairs)
