I got a new Fender CD-60 today and was just wondering if I'll need to tune it? It doesn't sound properly out of tune but there's just something that doesn't sound right to me. I hate having to fiddle around tuning a guitar because I seem to end up making it worse. I got a tuner. Top E string seems far too 'loose' and low sounding and the tuner won't even pick up on it. So will I need to sort the strings or is it just me thinking something is wrong? Also could someone give me some help on tuning, I learnt years ago the very basics of it and googled earlier but it's all just gone over my head today.

Yes, I would say you'd definitely have to tune it. In fact, you should be routinely checking the tuning every time you pick it up. My acoustic sits on a stand in our living room and I pick it up every day to play for at least a few minutes, most days it's fine but some days it needs a little tweaking, just a good habit to check it when you pick it up first thing.

Now, what kind of tuner, does it have to be plugged in to the guitar, is it a clip on type, or is it one that has to be close enough to pick up the noise of the string. Different kinds of tuners have different methods of use. My clip on tuner works best in one "sweet spot" on the bottom side of my headstock, and some tuners use the noise/vibration and have to be next to or sitting on the guitar to work. Lots of variables, so you'd need to provide more info.

And tuning is nothing to get worried about, once you figure out how your setup of guitar and tuner work best, it's just a routine. Just be patient and learn how to use it properly and it'll be a breeze, plenty of people on here with good advice. 8)

It's a clip on tuner. When tuning it, do I have to play the strings open and go for E A D G B E. Or do I have to use frets. Rough day yesterday and I didn't manage to ask that. Sorry for such a stupid question but my minds just gone.

You should just be able to play against the open strings. If your tuner has trouble picking up on certain strings try playing a 12th fret harmonic and see if the tuner has better luck with that.

To play a harmonic at the 12th fret just place the tip of a your finger lightly on the string directly over the fret (not behind the fret) without pressing the string down. Then pluck the string with your picking hand and release the string. you should get a good pure note that sounds one octave higher than the strings sounds open.

Cheers and good luck,

Thanks. I remember trying to tune my Ibanez and the bottom E string snapped. So I suppose I'm a bit wary of it. Will most likely end up needing help replacing strings next haha  But thanks to you both for replying. Much appreciated.

Let us know how it goes. My Montara now has a built in tuner since I replaced the preamp. But on my basses I use a clip on tuner sometimes, and like Zach said you should be able to tune the open strings but the harmonic can work better sometimes.

And the other thing to a clip on tuner is, I may have mentioned it, there will often be a "sweet spot" on the headstock where it works better then other spots. So if you're having problems tuning try moving it around.

Once you get it you'll be golden. 8)

Hey NeXus,
As to changing the strings, it may seem like an easy thing to do but there are a number of things that you need to get right or you'll have difficulty tuning and the guitar's tone will suffer. My recommendation is to start with this video below and maybe check out a couple of others from YouTube. There are a couple of different approaches to achieve the same results namely a stable wrap of string around the post winding down toward the headstock, in the correct direction and with the right amount of wraps around the post. Find the approach that works best for you and stick with it.
