I am a Fender fan...love my Tele, my bass, my amps, etc. In the electric/bass department, you really can't beat their gear.

However, on the quest for a lower priced "knock around" guitar a few weeks ago, I played several different Fender acoustics. They looked great. Really liked a candy apple red model that I played that had a Strat headstock...well, I liked it until I played it. In fact, every Fender acoustic that I picked up was that way. From the $100 on up to some $350 models, all of them just sounded dead. Especially when compared to comparable (in price) Yamaha and Washburn models. Ended up buying a Yamaha FG700s used...sounds incredible, and only $140 used.

My question is, does Fender make a "higher end" line of acoustics? You know, guitars that sound more open and lively? I really wanted a Fender...just didn't find one that had the same sound as the Yammies and Washburns I tried out.

Yes, I realize that Fender owns Takamine (I own and love one of those) and Ovation...just curious about Fender acoustics...:)

As diplomatically as I can put this: Regardless of whether or not Fender offers 'expensive' acoustics, their true, "higher end" acoustics would be found within their Guild and Tacoma brands.

i'm been playing guitar for 27yrs. , i had some money in my pocket and was just checkin out the music store, played a few guitars, tried a few cut aways and didn't like the sound the were giving me, to thin, and i tried the FENDER DG8S NAT acoustic, they say there is a buzz on the low E, some guitars that is, but the one i played didn't, and i was blown away at the quality and sound of this guitar, sounds like i should have payed 5 or 6 hundred for it , damn i like it, i give this little baby a 10, and i just mike it through the PA with a mic and mic stand , i think that is the best way to play an acoustic if you wanna play for an audience. They call this a beginner guitar cause it comes as a package, but it sounds like a pros guitar, the quality, the sound, it could fool even the best, just go and try one, mic it and tell me again what you think. Enjoy the cost cause this would be one of the best deals for your buck.

I'd like to try that one, because I've never played a lower-end Fender Acoustic that didn't get blown away by a similarly priced Yamaha.

Found a DG200SCE at my local Guitar Center - great sound, love the looks and the neck. $400. You won't find it on the Fender site - custom for GC? I've learned that it was based on a design for a more "professional" acoustic/electric. Overall, it sounds much more expensive than it was. :)

I have to say...months after posting this, I also found the DG200SCE. Simply amazing guitar! After a sale price plus a coupon, I walked out for less than $300. After a setup and re-string, it has surpassed my $1100 Takamine as my favorite acoustic... Great job Fender!

I heard a Fender DG8S NAT and it was really a great sounding guitar. It is really worth the price.

Just "found" the DG200SCE at Guitar Center, and I love it. Great set up off the shelf. No buzz. Great sound. Rich tones. Great action. Great price. Other than that....... Look at it closely and you might just walk out with one.

I understand you already found a guitar but I thought I would clear this up. Fender owns Kaman Music Corporation who only makes "some" brands and distributes the others. They are best know for Ovation.

Takamine is a Japanese manufacture that also makes the lower priced Jasmine. Hamer is gone as of this year (most employees will transition to Guild and Fender.) Betcha Charvel bites the bullet before too long as well (or Tacoma Guitars.)

From the About Fender Musical Instruments page...

Quote:
In January of 2008, FMIC also acquired Kaman Music Corporation (KMC), the largest independent U.S. distributor of musical instruments and accessories. KMC produces and/or distributes Ovation®, Takamine® and Hamer® guitars; Latin Percussion®, Gretsch® Drums, Gibraltar® Hardware, Toca® Percussion, Sabian® cymbals and Genz Benz® amplifiers; in addition to a full catalog of more than 36,000 wholesale music products.

Yup, still the best bang for the buck acoustic that I've tried!

I recently picked up a Fender T-bucket 300ce. It was down to that model or an Ovation. Final decision was made by my flight case (the Ovation didn't fit).

The T-bucket was a very pleasant surprise. Graph Tech NuBone nut? Compensated Graph Tech NuBone saddle? Fishman preamp? Onboard tuner? Scalloped bracing? All for $300 and it looks like this??:

I will have to do a proper review, but WOW I'm very happy with this purchase so far. I have to imagine Fender's development team knew their acoustics had a bad reputation and they brainstormed ways to make them more 'sellable'. They've certainly come a long way from the ones I've tried in the past.

yup, I used to recommend Yamaha FG700 series to people all the time as a solid beginner guitar, but that has changed over the past couple of years. Fender has done a good job of making very playable, great sounding guitars in the $400 and less price range.

Congrats on the nice guitar!

I guess it depends on how you define "high-end", if it is just a matter of a specific price point (and which in that case?) or based on quality. But if you look at quality, then review sites like http://www.guitarsreport.com/ rank several fender acoustic guitars as the best within acoustic guitar categories - for example T-Bucket 400CE, Pro TPD-2 and CD-140SCE.
