Hi Guys, just a quick question
I have a beautiful 1984 Gemini II, plays beautifully, far better than any other acoustic I know however it is let down by some rather crummy economy tuners (I believe they came stock) like these:Image
I am thinking of replacing these but wondered which would be best suited for the guitar in terms of style etc. Obviously the sensible thing would be to go for some ultra modern, high precision thingamabobs but I would like to maintain the historical integrity of the instrument as much as possible.
Any ideas?
Cheers

Hey Hodgecraft,
I'd go for the best quality tuners that you can regardless of historical integrity; I love Fender acoustics but they are not known for their collector value. If possible get something that fits the holes that are drilled for the tuner shaft. Years ago I bought some Grovers for my old F-35 and the shaft on them was the tiniest bit bigger than the holes on the headstock. Let me tell you, taking a drill to a favourite instrument is nerve-wracking. But I definitely don't regret replacing them, the "new" ones are about 20 years old now and still hold tune like a rock.

Best advice is to take off a tuner and take it in to a music store with a good repair department and have them measure the thing and recommend a replacement. If you know any working musicians ask them who they trust with their guitars. You may even be able to get a better quality upgrade tuner that is a direct replacement screw holes line up etc. They will also likely be happy to give you tips on installing them if you want to do it yourself. And they'd of course be happier to install them for you.

Remember you can always keep the original tuners and label each by string (high E, B, G etc.) so you can put them back on later if you are concerned about historical integrity. You could perhaps look for a replacement tuner with anchor screws positioned that any evidence of them would be covered by the old tuners if/when you replace them.

If you do opt to install them yourself and you need to drill out the existing tuner shaft holes get professional advice. I had a few largish chips fly off the headstock. Luckily I was able to find most of them and glue them back in place. Even luckier that I didn't do worse damage.

Good luck and keep us posted,
Zach
