Hi there, I am just wondering what strings everyone uses on their acoustics - and how they sound.
I currently use D'Addario Phosphor Bronze EJ16's but am wondering if there is anything out there that is warmer sounding (without getting bassey) but also not so loud sounding?

Also, I have a cutaway on my acoustic and I find the bass and mids drown out the high strings - is this due to the cutaway affecting the highs or would different strings help resolve this?

i use my martin SP mediums on my '96 Fender DG30SCE but i have found over the years that it is not all about the strings...have you tried adding a bone saddle and some ebony bridge pins? also, if you're playing plugged in - a rubber sound hole cover does WONDERS - not only reducing feedback, but adding some 'punch'.

a few simple, inexpensive suggestions to find that sweet sound without being too bassy or tinny...

just my 2 cents!

I use the exact same strings on my acoustic that I do on my electrics.

I have the D'addario EXP strings on my dreadnaught, and they're not warm at all. They're too harsh for me, really.

I use D'Addario Phosphor Bronze EJ16's on my 35 year old 1973 Léro Model 58 Dreadnought. They sound very nice to me.

You can use the same strings on each although not recommended. Electric guitar strings tend to be lighter gauge and contain additional ferrous metal materials that allow the vibration of the strings to affect the pickups more.

Acoustic strings are mostly phosphorous bronze, bronze or nickel and tend to be heavier. Acoustic necks are set up for this, electric guitars on the other hand are not and this could cause problems down the road due to the increased tension. The truss rod is designed to provide an opposing tension on the neck counter to the forward tension the strings place on the neck. If the rod is pulling harder than the strings, the neck could begin to warp backwards, or vice versa if the tensions are reversed. Shouldn't be much to worry about in the short run, though.

Thanx for the info, would have never thought to try something like that. It makes sense that the lighter elec strings on an aoustic could mess up the neck.

I guess if you wanted to use elec's on an acoustic long term and could find a set that worked well, maybe your local luthier would be able to adjust the neck for that.

I always thought that the heavier acoustic strings were behnd alot of the acoustic sound.
