Two question:

I purchased a used 12 string villager, it looks like new with almost no wear and a slight buzz on the 6th string played on the 2nd fret.

First, I'd like to know, how do I figure out its age? Can I do that with the serial number?

Secondly, is it recommended to tune down and capo up to relieve stress on the neck? One or two steps?

I can't help you with the exact age but if yours is a vintage instrument from the first series of Villagers that were produced (1965-1969) it will have a bolt on neck with a metal plate and 4 screw heads on the back of the guitar. If it has a heel like a regular acoustic guitar it is likely no more than a year old.

As to tuning I believe that modern 12 strings are designed to be tuned to standard concert pitch. Any other forum members have any more info on this? I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination so you probably want to take it in to a store with a good repair department and ask one of their guitar techs.

Below are some links that may help:

Current Villager Product page:

Acoustic Instrument Dating page:

And this is the product page for the D'addario 12 string set that the current Villager comes with, note the string tension chart:

Good Luck!
